Number Of Ingredients 5

2 cups flour
1 cup iodized table salt
2/3 cup ground cloves
2/3 cup ground cinnamon
1-1/4 cup water

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 200°F. In stand mixer, fitted with a paddle attachment, combine the flour, salt, cloves, and cinnamon on low speed until well combined. Slowly add the water until the dough starts to come together. Move the dough to a floured work surface and knead until the mixture is elastic and smooth. If the dough is too sticky, sprinkle it with a little flour until the stickiness is gone. (Be careful not to add too much flour, however, as it will dry out the dough and cause it to crack.) Using a rolling pin that's been dusted with flour, roll out the dough until it's about 1/4" thick. Then, use cookie cutters to cut the dough into shapes. Make a hole towards the top of each shape with a straw. Move the ornaments to an ungreased cookie sheet and bake for 2 hours. Transfer the ornaments to a cooling rack and allow them to harden. (This could take one or two days.) After they're dry, you can decorate the shapes, if desired. Then, spray with a couple layers of shellac to preserve. When dry, thread a piece of ribbon through the hole at the top for hanging and tie.

Yield 1

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 cup ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon ground cloves
1 tablespoon ground nutmeg
¾ cup applesauce
2 tablespoons glue

Steps:

  • In a medium bowl, stir together the cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. Mix in the applesauce and glue. Work the mixture with your hands 2 to 3 minutes to form a ball. If mixture is too wet, add more cinnamon. If mixture is too dry, add more applesauce.
  • Lightly dust a clean surface with cinnamon. Roll out the dough to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut out shapes with cookie cutters, and use a toothpick to make a hole at the top for hanging with a ribbon.
  • Dry in a slow oven 200 degrees F (100 degrees C) for several hours, or air dry in a sunny spot for 4 or 5 days. When dry, decorate with gingham and/ or ribbon.

Tips:

  • For best results, use fresh herbs and spices. Dried herbs and spices can be used, but they will not be as flavorful.
  • If you don't have a rolling pin, you can use a wine bottle or even a glass to roll out the dough.
  • Be careful not to overwork the dough, as this will make it tough.
  • If the dough is too sticky, add more flour. If the dough is too dry, add more water.
  • Bake the ornaments at a low temperature for a long time to ensure that they are dry and hard.
  • Once the ornaments are baked, let them cool completely before decorating them.
  • You can use any type of paint or marker to decorate the ornaments.
  • If you want to hang the ornaments on a tree, use a ribbon or string to attach them.

Conclusion:

Cinnamon clove salt dough ornaments are easy to make and a fun way to celebrate the holidays. They are also a great way to use up leftover herbs and spices. With a little creativity, you can make ornaments that are unique and special. So get creative and have fun!
