CHRISTMAS MORNING FRENCH TOAST
I dress up French toast for Christmastime by stuffing thick bread slices with a nutty, fruity cream-cheese filling. You can skip the maple syrup -the recipe includes a simple but delectable orange sauce. -Janet Caico, Fleming Island, FL

CHRISTMAS MORNING FRENCH TOAST
I use Cranberry Pistachio bread from HEB Bakery to make this very special french toast recipe. By allowing the bread to become stale it holds up to the egg soak very well and creates a very creamy custard within the bread.

Steps:
- 1. slice bread into 1 inch slices
- 2. lay bread on rack in oven with the temperature off, overnight. This will allow the bread to become slightly stale, and better able to hold up to the custard.
- 3. mix eggs and half and half until smooth.
- 4. pour 1/3 of the egg mixture into a large baking dish. lay slices of bread in baking dish and cover with remaining eggs mixture.
- 5. leave bread in egg mixture for about 7 minutes, then turn over and leave for another 5 minutes until eggs are absorbed by bread.
- 6. fry 2 slices at a time in butter until browned and place into lightly greased baking dish.
- 7. after all slices are fried and laid in baking dish, you can slide this into the oven at 325 for about half an hour. Serve with maple syrup
Tips:
- Use a good quality bread for the French toast. A firm, slightly stale bread will hold up better to the soaking and cooking process.
- Don't overcrowd the pan when cooking the French toast. This will cause the bread to steam instead of fry, resulting in soggy toast.
- Use a non-stick pan or a well-seasoned cast iron skillet to cook the French toast. This will help prevent the bread from sticking.
- Cook the French toast over medium heat. This will help to ensure that the bread cooks through without burning.
- Flip the French toast only once during the cooking process. This will help to prevent the bread from breaking.
- Serve the French toast immediately with your favorite toppings. Some popular options include butter, syrup, powdered sugar, fruit, and whipped cream.
Conclusion:
French toast is a classic breakfast dish that is easy to make and can be enjoyed by people of all ages. With a few simple ingredients and a little bit of time, you can create a delicious and satisfying meal that will help you start your day off right.
