Time 15h

Yield 15

Number Of Ingredients 17

½ cup warm milk
1 tablespoon white sugar
1 (.25 ounce) envelope active dry yeast
1 cup heavy cream
3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
¼ cup white sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground cardamom
½ cup butter
1 (8 ounce) can almond paste
½ cup crushed sliced almonds
½ cup white sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon almond extract
½ cup white sugar
1 egg white, beaten
½ cup sliced almonds

Steps:

  • In a small bowl, stir together the milk and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let stand for 10 minutes to dissolve. Stir in cream.
  • In a separate bowl, stir together the flour, sugar, salt and cardamom. Cut in the butter using a pastry blender or pinching with your fingers until it is a course mealy texture. Stir in the yeast mixture until well blended. Pat into a ball, flatten slightly, then wrap in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for 12 to 24 hours.
  • To make the filling, mix the almond paste, almonds, sugar, cinnamon and almond extract using an electric mixer until evenly blended. It may be crumbly.
  • Roll the chilled dough out into a 2 inch wide and 24 inch long rectangle. Spread the filling to within 2 inches of the sides and roll up into a tube. Cover your work surface with sugar, and roll the tube of dough in the sugar to coat thoroughly. Roll and stretch the dough out to form a long rope about 40 inches long. Place on a parchment lined baking sheet and shape into a pretzel shape.
  • Brush the top of the pretzel with egg white and sprinkle with almonds. Cover loosely with a towel and let rise for 45 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Bake the kringle in the preheated oven until golden brown, 25 to 30 minutes. Cut into slices to serve.

Time 1h30m

Number Of Ingredients 14

2 c scalded organic raw whole milk, cooled to 120*
1 1/2 Tbsp yeast
1/2 c raw organic butter, softened
8 c organic all purpose flour, sifted
2 exlarge organic eggs, beaten
1 tsp freshly grated organic cardamom
1 tsp orange or lemon extra..i like the oil better
1 c organic granulated sugar
1 egg yolk
slivered almonds
1 organic egg yolk
1 c candied orange or lemon peel
1 cup organic golden raisins, soak in warm water till soft
powder sugar

Steps:

  • 1. I save all my lemon and orange peels, using them to make my own candied ones. But you can buy candied orange or lemon at the store during the holidays.
  • 2. Dissolve yeast in the 1/4 cup of warm milk. Pour into a large bowl with the warm scalded milk. (Scaled milk needs to be cooled to warm, before pour the yeast mixure in)
  • 3. Add the softed butter, sugar, salt, extract, Cardamom and eggs. Mix thoroughly. Add the candied orange or lemon peel and the raisins.
  • 4. Stir in about 3/4 of the sifted flour and stir till well blended. Turn out and knead the dough...add more flour as needed until you have a soft dough. Knead for about 10 to 15 minutes.
  • 5. Cover and let rise in a warm place till double.
  • 6. Slightly floured a surface to shape the bread on. Cut the dough in 3 equal pieces, roll them (do not stretch) till they are about 12 inches long. Braid the dough, pinch the end pieces together. Cover and set aside to rise double.
  • 7. Brush with egg wash and sprinkle the almonds on top.
  • 8. Bake 350* 20 to 30 minutes or until golden brown and bread tests to done.
  • 9. Sift powdered sugar on top to serve.

Tips:

  • Plan ahead: Kringle dough needs time to rise, so start the recipe at least a day before you want to serve it.
  • Use high-quality ingredients: The better the ingredients, the better the kringle will taste. Use real butter, fresh eggs, and high-quality flour.
  • Don't overmix the dough: Overmixing the dough will make the kringle tough. Mix it just until the ingredients are combined.
  • Let the dough rise in a warm place: The dough will rise best in a warm place, such as a sunny window or a turned-off oven.
  • Don't overfill the kringle: If you overfill the kringle, it will be difficult to roll and shape. Fill it no more than halfway.
  • Bake the kringle until it is golden brown: The kringle is done baking when it is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Conclusion:

Christmas kringle is a delicious and festive pastry that is perfect for the holiday season. With a little planning and effort, you can make a kringle that your family and friends will love. So what are you waiting for? Get baking!
