SPICY CHIPOTLE-CINNAMON ROASTED SWEET POTATOES

Spicy Chipotle-Cinnamon Roasted Sweet Potatoes image

Looking for something a little different this Thanksgiving? Here's a nice way to liven up your menu or to ensure that you aren't the fifth person to bring candied yams to that family dinner.

Provided by Closet Foodie

Categories     Low Protein

Time 35m

Yield 6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 5

3 large sweet potatoes or 3 large yams
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground chipotle chile pepper (more or less to taste- but be warned, ground chipotle is hot)
salt

Steps:

  • Preheat your oven to 450 degrees.
  • Wash and scrub the sweet potatoes.
  • Cut each sweet potato into bite-sized chunks (make each piece roughly about an inch).
  • Add the sweet potato pieces, the extra virgin olive oil, cinnamon, and chipotle to a gallon-sized storage bag.
  • Close the storage bag and shake, making sure all of the spices are evenly distributed on the pieces (otherwise you might find out what happens when too much chipotle sticks to an individual piece).
  • Spread out the spiced sweet potato pieces in an even layer onto a baking sheet.
  • Salt to taste.
  • Bake the sweet potatoes in the oven for 15 minutes, then using a spatula to turn them, place them back in the oven for another 15-20 minutes. If you like them crisper, you can add a few minutes, just make sure to check on them so they don't burn. Serve them as they are, or you can dip them in ketchup like french fries.

Tips:

  • Choose the Right Sweet Potatoes: Select firm and unblemished sweet potatoes for the best results.
  • Wash and Scrub Thoroughly: Before cooking, thoroughly wash and scrub the sweet potatoes to remove any dirt or debris.
  • Pierce the Potatoes: Use a fork or knife to pierce the sweet potatoes several times before baking. This helps the potatoes cook evenly and prevents them from bursting.
  • Use Fresh Ingredients: For the best flavor, use fresh ingredients like garlic, onion, and cilantro. If using canned chipotle peppers, choose a brand that uses whole peppers and adobo sauce for a smoky and flavorful taste.
  • Don't Overcook the Potatoes: Keep an eye on the sweet potatoes during baking to prevent overcooking. Overcooked potatoes become soft and mushy, losing their natural sweetness and texture.
  • Serve Immediately: Chipotle sweet potatoes are best served immediately after baking. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven or microwave.

Conclusion:

These chipotle sweet potatoes are a delightful blend of flavors and textures, offering a unique and satisfying side dish or snack. The combination of sweet potatoes, chipotle peppers, and aromatic spices creates a harmonious balance of sweet, smoky, and savory notes. By following these tips, you can ensure perfectly cooked sweet potatoes bursting with flavor. Whether you're looking for a healthy side dish or a flavorful appetizer, these chipotle sweet potatoes are sure to impress. So, gather your ingredients, preheat your oven, and embark on a culinary journey that will tantalize your taste buds!
