Time 1h25m

Yield 6 servings

Number Of Ingredients 16

4 tablespoons unsalted butter, plus more for the baking dish
2 pounds ground beef (93 percent lean)
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 large red bell pepper, chopped
1 bunch scallions (about 6), chopped
2 teaspoons paprika
1 cup frozen corn, thawed
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
2 1/2 cups low-sodium chicken broth
1/2 cup heavy cream
2 tablespoons chopped fresh Italian parsley
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
2 teaspoons chopped fresh dill
2 teaspoons chopped fresh thyme
One 1-pound bag frozen seasoned curly fries
2 cups shredded Swiss cheese

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Butter a 9-by-13-inch glass or ceramic baking dish.
  • Heat a medium Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the butter, and once it melts, add the beef and sprinkle with 1 teaspoon salt. Cook, crumbling with a wooden spoon, until browned, 4 to 5 minutes. Add the bell pepper and scallions (saving a handful of the greens for garnish) and cook until the vegetables begin to wilt, 2 to 3 minutes. Add the paprika and several grinds of pepper, then stir to coat the beef in the spices. Stir in the corn.
  • Sprinkle the flour over the beef and stir to incorporate. Cook and stir until the flour begins to toast, about 2 minutes. Add the broth and cream gradually while stirring. Bring to a simmer and cook until the sauce thickens, 3 to 4 minutes. Stir in the parsley, mustard, dill and thyme. Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish. Arrange the curly fries in a tight layer over the top. Sprinkle with the cheese. Bake until the cheese and fries are crispy and the sauce is bubbly, about 40 minutes. Sprinkle with the reserved scallion greens and serve hot.

CHINESE HAMBURGER CASSEROLE

Chinese Hamburger Casserole image

This is a recipe that came from our church's first cookbook more than 30 years ago. We like to serve it with cooked rice and a vegetable.

Provided by Chicagopm

Categories     White Rice

Time 1h30m

Yield 8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 lb ground beef
1 (10 1/2 ounce) can cream of mushroom soup
1 (10 1/2 ounce) can cream of chicken soup
1 cup water
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 cup sliced fresh mushrooms or 1 (8 ounce) can mushrooms
1 cup sliced celery
2 medium onions, coarsely chopped
1/2 cup white rice, washed
1 can chinese noodles, crisp

Steps:

  • Brown meat in skillet.
  • Add remaining ingredients except noodles.
  • Stir well and pour into a 2 quart casserole.
  • Cover and bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.
  • Uncover and bake another 30 minutes.
  • Sprinkle noodles over top and return to oven and bake an additional 15 minutes.
  • Serves 8.

Tips:

  • Choose the Right Meat: Use high-quality, lean protein such as chicken, pork, or beef. Cut the meat into thin strips or small pieces for even cooking.
  • Marinate the Meat: Marinating the meat in a flavorful mixture of soy sauce, rice wine, garlic, ginger, and spices enhances its taste and tenderness.
  • Use Fresh Vegetables: Select crisp, colorful vegetables like broccoli, carrots, bell peppers, and snap peas. Cut them into uniform sizes for even cooking.
  • Control the Heat: Maintain a high heat throughout the cooking process to ensure that the vegetables remain crisp and the meat is cooked thoroughly.
  • Add Sauces and Seasonings Gradually: Start with a small amount of sauce and seasonings, and adjust according to your preference. Over-seasoning can overpower the natural flavors of the dish.

Conclusion:

Chinese hotdish is a versatile and flavorful dish that offers endless possibilities for customization. With its combination of tender meat, crisp vegetables, and savory sauce, it's a satisfying meal that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Whether you prefer chicken, pork, or beef, and an array of vegetables, this dish can be tailored to your liking. By following these tips and experimenting with different ingredients and flavors, you can create a delicious and satisfying Chinese hotdish that will become a staple in your home cooking repertoire.
