  • Meanwhile, heat the remaining tablespoon oil along with the butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onion, pepper and a generous pinch of salt and cook until just tender and beginning to brown, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic, sausage, thyme and sage, and cook, breaking up with a wooden spoon until browned and cooked through, 4 to 5 minutes more.
  • When the rice is cooked and liquid is absorbed, turn off the heat, remove the lid and add the sausage and vegetables. Fluff and stir gently with a fork to combine. Add the rice to a serving dish and sprinkle with the chives before serving hot.

SLOW COOKER CHICKEN STEW WITH WILD RICE

Slow Cooker Chicken Stew with Wild Rice image

This thick, stick-to-your-ribs stew features tender wild rice and buttery-soft chicken. The poultry slowly simmers on the bone all day long, lending more flavor to the soup and moisture to the meat. After the long cook time, the meat falls off the bone and shreds easily.

Tips:

  • Choose the right type of sausage. For this recipe, a spicy or mild chicken sausage works well. You can also use a smoked sausage for a more intense flavor.
  • Don't overcrowd the pot. When browning the sausage and vegetables, make sure to do it in batches if necessary. This will help to prevent the ingredients from steaming instead of browning.
  • Use a good quality chicken broth. The broth is an important flavor component in this stew, so make sure to use a good quality one. You can use homemade chicken broth or a store-bought variety.
  • Simmer the stew for at least 30 minutes. This will allow the flavors to meld and develop.
  • Serve the stew with your favorite sides. Some good options include mashed potatoes, rice, or crusty bread.

Conclusion:

This chicken sausage and cabbage stew with wild rice is a hearty and flavorful dish that is perfect for a cold night. It is easy to make and can be tailored to your own tastes. So next time you are looking for a comforting and delicious meal, give this stew a try!
