HOMEMADE CHEX® PARTY MIX
This homemade snack mix recipe my mom has had since it originated in the 1940s. This was always a holiday favorite at our house. So much better than the newer versions with a richer flavor with the extra butter. This is a very hard-to-find recipe so I thought I'd share. Great to put in tins and give away. I always quadruple the recipe and store extra in freezer. Store in an airtight container or large zip-top bags.

This recipe came off the back of a cereal box, probably around 1956. It is way different than many of the recipes you find on line today.

GLUTEN FREE CHEX PARTY MIX
Chex Mix was one of the snacks I missed most when I was diagnosed with Celiac disease. When I heard that General Mills had reformulated their recipe for Rice Chex, I quickly got to thinking of how I could adapt the recipe to be gluten free. The brand names I've listed are the ones I've found to be certified gluten free. It tastes just how I remember!

WATKINS CHEX MAPLE PARTY MIX
I first tasted this sweet, different version of Chex mix at a Watkins home-demo party. Almost everyone went home from the party with a copy of this recipe. The maple flavor extract is the secret ingredient. Plan ahead - once cooked, this will need to cool before serving.

Steps:
- Melt butter or margarine in a large microwavable bowl big enough to hold all of the cereal& nuts later (about 2 quarts)- don't put the cereal& nuts in yet, though.
- If your microwave is very small, you may need to make half batches.
- Once melted, quickly whisk in brown sugar and maple extract.
- Stir in the cereal and the nuts until coated and return bowl to microwave and cook on HIGH heat 4-5 minutes, stirring after every minute.
- Spread out mix onto cookie sheets lined with wax paper and let cool.
- Break apart and store in an airtight container.
Tips:
- Choose a variety of Chex cereals: Use a mix of colors and flavors to make your party mix more visually appealing and flavorful.
- Add other ingredients to your liking: Feel free to add nuts, pretzels, or any other snacks you enjoy. You can also add a variety of spices, such as garlic powder, onion powder, or chili powder, to taste.
- Don't overcrowd the baking sheet: When baking the Chex mix, make sure to spread it out in a single layer on the baking sheet. This will help it to bake evenly and prevent it from becoming soggy.
- Let the Chex mix cool completely before storing: Once the Chex mix is baked, let it cool completely before storing it in an airtight container. This will help to keep it fresh and crispy.
Conclusion:
Chex party mix is a delicious and easy-to-make snack that is perfect for any occasion. With its combination of sweet and salty flavors, it is sure to be a hit with everyone. So next time you are looking for a quick and easy snack, give Chex party mix a try. You won't be disappointed!
