HOMEMADE VANILLA EXTRACT

Homemade Vanilla Extract image

Provided by Kelsey Nixon

Time 2m

Yield 16 ounces homemade vanilla

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 (16-ounce) clean glass jar or bottle with tight-fitting lid
16 ounces vodka
5 vanilla beans
1 egg white, beaten
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
4 cups whole almonds
3/4 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Steps:

  • Using a sharp knife, slice the vanilla beans open lengthwise to expose the seeds. Tuck the beans in the jar or bottle and pour in the vodka. Close the jar, shake it a few times, and place it in a cool, dark space. Let the jar rest for 6 to 8 weeks, shaking it again once or twice a week. The mixture will get darker and darker over time. When the extract starts to run low, top it off with more vodka and shake again. Also, whenever you use a vanilla bean, don't hesitate to add it to the jar after you've used it. This will continue to "feed" your vanilla extract and it should keep forever. Vanilla Variations: Vanilla Sugar: Split 2 vanilla beans and scrape the seeds into an air-tight container with 3 cups granulated sugar. Cover the beans in sugar and tightly seal. Let the sugar sit for 2 weeks. Use just as you would use regular granulated sugar.
  • Vanilla Almonds: Preheat the oven to 300 degrees F. Beat the egg white with the vanilla extract, add the almonds and stir to coat. Combine the sugar, salt, and cinnamon and combine with mixture. Place in a single layer on a greased baking sheet. Bake at 300 degrees F for 20 minutes. Remove and cool on wax paper and break into clusters.

Categories     Frozen Desserts

Time 15m

Yield 2 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 1/2 cups vanilla ice cream
1/4 cup powdered cherry drink mix
1 lime, zested
4 cups ice
1/2 cup cold water

Steps:

  • Place two tall glasses in the freezer to chill.
  • Add the ice cream to a food processor and pulse to the consistency of soft-serve ice cream. Transfer the ice cream to a bowl and return to the freezer while you make the cherry slush.
  • Wash out the food processor bowl and add the cherry drink mix, lime zest, 4 cups ice and 1/2 cup cold water. Process until smooth, adding more ice or water to adjust for desired consistency; for me, the icier the better.
  • To assemble the glacier:
  • Remove the glasses from the freezer and fill each halfway with cherry slush. Add 2 scoops of the vanilla ice cream to the center of each glass, pressing down to allow the slush to push up the sides of the glass. Top with more cherry slush and serve immediately. I like to serve these with a spoon and straw.

Tips:

  • Use fresh cherries: Fresh cherries have a more intense flavor and a better texture than frozen or canned cherries. If you can't find fresh cherries, frozen cherries will work in a pinch.
  • Pit the cherries before using them: Pitting the cherries is a bit of a pain, but it's worth it for the best flavor and texture. You can use a cherry pitter to make quick work of this task.
  • Use high-quality vanilla extract: Pure vanilla extract is made from real vanilla beans, and it has a much better flavor than artificial vanilla extract. If you can afford it, use pure vanilla extract in all of your recipes.
  • Don't overmix the batter: Overmixing the batter will make the glacier tough. Mix the batter just until it is combined.
  • Bake the glacier in a preheated oven: A preheated oven will help the glacier to bake evenly.
  • Let the glacier cool completely before serving: The glacier needs to cool completely before serving so that it has time to firm up.

Conclusion:

Cherry lime vanilla glacier is a delicious and refreshing dessert that is perfect for any occasion. It is easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste preferences. Whether you like it tart or sweet, creamy or tangy, you can find a cherry lime vanilla glacier recipe that you will love. So next time you are looking for a special dessert, give cherry lime vanilla glacier a try.
