Categories     main-dish

Time 1h40m

Yield 8 to 12 servings

Number Of Ingredients 11

One 20-ounce bag hoagie rolls
One 9-ounce package frozen steak slices, such as Steak-umms, thawed
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 large yellow onion, chopped
2 medium green bell peppers, cored, seeded and chopped
One 8-ounce container fresh sliced mushrooms
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
One 15-ounce jar processed cheese sauce
6 large eggs
1 1/2 cups half-and-half
12 slices provolone

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Tear the hoagie rolls into medium bite-sized pieces and spread on a baking sheet. Toast in the oven until dried out, 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Brown the steak slices in the oil, breaking up into pieces with a wooden spoon, in a cast-iron or nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Remove from the skillet and drain all but 1 tablespoon of fat. Cook the onion, peppers, mushrooms, a pinch of salt and some pepper, stirring occasionally, until soft and translucent, 4 to 5 minutes. Add the steak back to the pan, stir well, turn off the heat and set aside.
  • Microwave the cheese sauce in 30-second intervals, stirring after each, until pourable. Pour into a large bowl with the eggs and half-and-half and whisk to combine well.
  • Place a layer of dried bread in a deep 9-by-13-inch casserole dish. Add a layer of steak and peppers, then ladle the cheese custard over until just covered. Repeat until all the ingredients are used. Bake the strata until just set, 30 to 35 minutes.
  • Preheat the broiler to low. Layer the provolone across the top of the pan, overlapping as necessary. Broil until the cheese topping is brown and bubbly, 5 to 10 minutes. Let the strata sit for 10 minutes to set before serving.

CHEESE STRATA

Cheese Strata image

This is an easy breakfast dish-great to make ahead for rushed mornings as it can be refrigerated overnight. Almost any chopped vegetable or meat can be added; just add before the cheese layer. If you're feeding a crowd, just double and use a 9x13 pan. This is adapted from a Mennonite cookbook, More-with-Less.

Provided by Kaarin

Categories     Breakfast

Time 1h

Yield 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 10

6 slices bread, torn (can be dry)
1/4 cup melted butter
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
1 1/3 cups milk
2 eggs
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
1 tablespoon dried parsley
pepper, to taste

Steps:

  • Arrange half the bread in a buttered 2 1/2 quart baking dish or 8x8 pan.
  • Drizzle half the melted butter over the bread.
  • If adding veggies or meat layer those on next.
  • Cover with the shredded cheese.
  • Top with remaining bread and drizzle remaining butter over.
  • In a small bowl, beat the milk, eggs and seasonings.
  • Pour over the bread.
  • Bake, covered, at 350 degrees for 40 minutes. Uncover and bake 10 more minutes.
  • Can be refrigerated unbaked up to 1 day.

Tips:

  • Use a good quality bread; a stale or dry bread will not yield the best results.
  • If you don't have any Monterey Jack cheese, you can substitute another type of mild cheddar cheese.
  • Be sure to cook the sausage until it is browned and cooked through.
  • Don't overcook the strata; it should be cooked through, but still slightly moist in the center.
  • Serve the strata immediately, or let it cool slightly and then reheat it before serving.

Conclusion:

Cheesy Chile Strata is a delicious and easy-to-make breakfast casserole that is perfect for a crowd. It is also a great way to use up leftover bread and sausage. This recipe is sure to be a hit with your family and friends.
