  • Use a variety of potatoes for a more complex flavor and texture. Yukon Gold and red potatoes are good choices.
  • Slice the potatoes thinly and evenly so that they cook evenly. A mandoline slicer is a helpful tool for this task.
  • Don't overcrowd the potatoes in the baking dish. They should be in a single layer so that they can brown properly.
  • Use a flavorful cheese blend. Cheddar and Gruyère are classic choices, but you can also experiment with other cheeses, such as Parmesan, Gouda, or Fontina.
  • Season the potatoes generously with salt and pepper. You can also add other herbs and spices, such as garlic powder, onion powder, or paprika.
  • Bake the potatoes until they are tender and golden brown. This usually takes about 45 minutes to an hour.
