THE ORIGINAL WALDORF SALAD

The Original Waldorf Salad image

"Millions who never visited the Waldorf owe him a debt," The New York Times wrote in 1950, upon Oscar Tschirky's death. Mr. Tschirky, a Swiss immigrant who became known as "Oscar of the Waldorf," is credited with creating this piece of Americana in 1893, a timeless dish whose popularity has spread far past the Waldorf's exclusive doors and into home kitchens. Over time, variations would include blue cheese, raisins and chopped walnuts, which can be added here alongside the celery and apples. But the original is an exercise in simplicity: four ingredients that have lived on for over a century.

SWEET TART WALDORF APPLE SALAD

Sweet Tart Waldorf Apple Salad image

This salad is a combination of a fruit dip recipe I learned last week and an apple salad I saw in the grocery store. It was enough inspiration to come up with this delicious recipe for our cook-out this afternoon! I have two boys and a daycare and would recommend this recipe as super-simple to make with kids. Children love chopping apples (even littles can do this with a butter knife) and mixing the dressing. I used ¾ of my dressing and reserved the rest to use as fruit dip later.

Tips:

  • Choose the right apples: Use firm, crisp apples that will hold their shape in the salad. Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Braeburn are all good choices.
  • Use fresh carrots: Fresh carrots will give your salad the best flavor and texture. If you only have pre-packaged carrots, be sure to rinse them well before using.
  • Shred the carrots and apples finely: This will help them blend well with the other ingredients and make the salad easier to eat.
  • Use a sharp knife to cut the celery: This will prevent the celery from becoming stringy.
  • Toast the walnuts: Toasting the walnuts will bring out their flavor and make them more crunchy.
  • Use a light dressing: A heavy dressing will weigh down the salad and make it less refreshing. A simple vinaigrette or yogurt dressing is a good choice.
  • Serve the salad immediately: Waldorf salad is best when served fresh. If you need to make it ahead of time, store it in the refrigerator for up to 2 hours before serving.

Conclusion:

Waldorf salad is a classic dish that is perfect for any occasion. It is easy to make, refreshing, and delicious. With its combination of sweet apples, crunchy carrots, crisp celery, and creamy walnuts, Waldorf salad is a surefire crowd-pleaser. So next time you are looking for a light and healthy salad to serve, give Waldorf salad a try. You won't be disappointed!
