CHEW BREAD
Cut into bars, this dessert is more like a blondie than a sweet bread. A moist center contributes to its chewy texture. Serve warm or at room temperature.

CHEW BREAD
Steps:
- Preheat oven 350. Melt stick of butter in a 13x9-inch pan - do not burn the butter. (Put pan in oven while it is preheating, then add butter while you mix the first two ingredients.)
- Mix brown sugar & eggs in a bowl. Slowly add melted butter, flavoring, and gradually add flour. Add nuts or leave out if you just want vanilla flavoring. This mix will be a bit thick. Scrape bowl right into warm pan. You can shake the pan a little, but you will NOT need to spread out - chew bread is self-leveling.
- Bake approx 25-30 minutes depending on your oven. If you overbake, you will burn it! You will also make it very tough.

Tips:
- Activate the yeast properly:Ensure the water is warm, between 105-115°F (41-46°C), not too hot or too cold, as it can kill the yeast. Sprinkle the sugar over the yeast and stir gently. Let it stand for 5-10 minutes until the mixture becomes foamy and bubbly.
- Use fresh ingredients:For the best flavor and texture, use fresh ingredients, especially the milk and eggs. If using active dry yeast, make sure it's not expired.
- Knead the dough properly:Knead the dough for at least 5-7 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic. This will help develop the gluten and give the bread a chewy texture.
- Let the dough rise in a warm place:Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size. This will allow the yeast to ferment and produce carbon dioxide, which will give the bread its characteristic light and airy texture.
- Bake the bread at the right temperature:Bake the bread at 375°F (190°C) for about 30-35 minutes, or until it reaches an internal temperature of 190°F (88°C). This will ensure the bread is cooked thoroughly and has a golden brown crust.
Conclusion:
Carolina Chew Bread is a delightful Southern treat that combines the flavors of cinnamon, sugar, and pecans in a soft and chewy bread. It's perfect for breakfast, lunch, or a snack. With a few simple ingredients and some patience, you can easily make this delicious bread at home. Remember to activate the yeast properly, use fresh ingredients, knead the dough well, let it rise in a warm place, and bake it at the right temperature. Enjoy!
