2 tablespoons water
7 ounces chocolate candy bar, broken into pieces
2 tablespoons shortening, divided
1 cup colored candy coating melts

Tips:

  • Choose the right apples: Use firm, tart apples that will hold their shape when dipped in caramel. Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Braeburn are all good choices.
  • Prepare your apples: Wash and dry the apples thoroughly. Remove the stems and insert a lollipop stick or popsicle stick into the top of each apple.
  • Make the caramel: Combine sugar, corn syrup, water, and salt in a saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 5 minutes, or until the caramel has thickened and turned a deep amber color.
