THE REAL MOJITO

The Real Mojito image

This is an authentic recipe for mojito. I sized the recipe for one serving, but you can adjust it accordingly and make a pitcher full. It's a very refreshing drink for hot summer days. Be careful when drinking it, however. If you make a pitcher you might be tempted to drink the whole thing yourself, and you just might find yourself talking Spanish in no time! Tonic water can be substituted instead of the soda water but the taste is different and somewhat bitter.

Time 10m

Yield 1

Number Of Ingredients 6

10 fresh mint leaves
½ lime, cut into 4 wedges
2 tablespoons white sugar, or to taste
1 cup ice cubes
1 ½ fluid ounces white rum
½ cup club soda

Steps:

  • Place mint leaves and 1 lime wedge into a sturdy glass. Use a muddler to crush the mint and lime to release the mint oils and lime juice. Add 2 more lime wedges and the sugar, and muddle again to release the lime juice. Do not strain the mixture. Fill the glass almost to the top with ice. Pour the rum over the ice, and fill the glass with carbonated water. Stir, taste, and add more sugar if desired. Garnish with the remaining lime wedge.

MOJITOS BY THE PITCHER

Mojitos by the Pitcher image

I have served this to people who have sworn that they dislike mojitos and they love it. I believe it is the fresh ingredients and the use of sugar, instead of simple syrup, muddled together that makes this cocktail refreshing and delicious. It takes a little bit of work but the results are well worth it. Serve over ice.

Tips:

  • Use fresh ingredients: Fresh ingredients will give your mojito the best flavor. If possible, use limes that are just ripe and mint leaves that are freshly picked.
  • Muddle the mint leaves gently: When muddling the mint leaves, be gentle. You don't want to bruise them too much, or they will release a bitter flavor.
  • Use a good quality rum: The rum is the main ingredient in a mojito, so it's important to use a good quality rum. Look for a rum that is smooth and has a good flavor.
  • Don't over-shake the mojito: Over-shaking the mojito will dilute it and make it watery. Shake the mojito just until the ingredients are combined.
  • Serve the mojito immediately: Mojitos are best served immediately after they are made. The mint leaves will start to wilt and lose their flavor if the mojito sits for too long.

Conclusion:

The Captain's Mojito is a refreshing and flavorful cocktail that is perfect for any occasion. It's easy to make and can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Whether you're hosting a party or just relaxing at home, the Captain's Mojito is a great choice.
