Another cherished family recipe has been recorded here at Recipezaar! With five boys for my parents to feed, I was lucky if I got half a sloppy joe to eat! To be served with previously frozen milk-de rigueur, as are most of my family recipes. This recipe puts a big smile on my face!

1 (10 3/4 ounce) can campbell's vegetarian vegetable soup, undiluted

  • In saute pan, heat up a little bit of oil and brown meat until no longer pink. Add the onion and saute another 2-3 minutes.

  • NOTE: If by chance the sloppy joe mixture is too watery, stir in about 1/2-1 tablespoon flour and incorporate well.

CAMPBELL'S SOUP-SLOPPY JOES

Campbell's Soup-Sloppy Joes image

This recipe is from my 1970 and 1976 Campbell Soup Cookbook (Cooking with Soup). The added ingredient that makes these sloppy joes taste good, is the chili powder (providing you add 1-1/2 tsp.). We enjoyed our sloppy joes topped with a bit of shredded sharp cheddar cheese.

Time 35m

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 lb. ground beef
1 cup diced onion (l only added 3/4 cup)
1 cup thinly sliced celery (l only added 1/2 cup)
1 tablesp. shortening
1/2 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. ground black pepper
1 tsp. chili powder (l added 1-1/2 teaspoons)
10-3/4 oz. can condensed tomato soup
5 hamburger buns
garnish: shredded cheddar cheese (optional)

Steps:

  • 1. In a large skillet, brown the ground beef, onion, and celery in the shortening. (I used 85% ground chuck for this recipe, so I didn't have to add any shortening, when cooking the beef and vegetables.) Drain off the excess grease.
  • 2. Season the cooked beef and vegetables, with the spices.
  • 3. Stir in the tomato soup.
  • 4. Cover skillet, and simmer to blend flavors. (I simmered mine for 30 minutes; stirring frequently.)
  • 5. Serve sloppy joes on hamburger buns topped with some shredded cheddar cheese, if desired.
  • 6. Note: I thought the sloppy joes tasted even better reheated the next day. You could really taste the chili powder in the sloppy joes a bit more.

Tips:

  • Choose the right ground beef: For the best flavor, use a ground beef that is at least 80% lean.
  • Season the beef well: Don't be afraid to season the beef generously with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. This will help to develop a delicious flavor.
  • Use a variety of peppers: Feel free to use a variety of peppers in your sloppy joes, such as bell peppers, jalapeƱos, and poblanos. This will add flavor and depth to the dish.
  • Don't overcook the beef: Overcooked beef will be tough and dry. Cook the beef just until it is browned and no longer pink in the center.
  • Use a good quality can of tomato soup: The tomato soup is a key ingredient in sloppy joes, so it's important to use a good quality soup. Look for a soup that is made with real tomatoes and has a rich, flavorful taste.
  • Add some sweetness: A little bit of sweetness can help to balance out the acidity of the tomato soup. You can add sweetness to your sloppy joes with brown sugar, honey, or maple syrup.
  • Serve the sloppy joes on a toasted bun: Toasted buns will help to absorb the sloppy joe sauce and make for a more delicious sandwich.

Conclusion:

Sloppy joes are a classic American comfort food that are perfect for a quick and easy weeknight meal. With just a few simple ingredients, you can make a delicious batch of sloppy joes that the whole family will love. So next time you're looking for a quick and easy meal, give sloppy joes a try. You won't be disappointed!
