While we love many kinds of tuna salad, this classic version tops them all. The crispy celery and red onion give add zest and crunch, while mayonnaise and touch of mustard marry it all together. The lemon juice is optional as it's not traditional, but we strongly recommend it to brighten up the flavors of the final dish.

SOUTHERN TUNA MACARONI SALAD

Southern Tuna Macaroni Salad image

Creamy from eggs and mayonnaise, tangy and acidic from mustard, pickles and chow chow, with a nice crunch from celery and onion. The Cajun spice just rounds it out with a blend of spices, the pimentos add a pop of color and sweetness, and tuna complements and ties all the flavors together in this Southern macaroni salad. Could top with some parsley for added color! Put this in a tortilla or melt some cheese on toast and make an open-faced sandwich!

Tips:

  • Choose the Right Tuna: Opt for high-quality tuna packed in water or oil, depending on your preference. Look for solid, chunk light, or albacore varieties.
  • Flake the Tuna: Use a fork to gently break the tuna into small flakes to ensure an even distribution throughout the salad.
  • Mayo vs. Greek Yogurt: Greek yogurt provides a healthier alternative to mayonnaise, offering a tangy and creamy texture while reducing calories and fat.
  • Fresh Herbs: Elevate the flavor profile with a variety of fresh herbs like parsley, cilantro, and dill. Chop them finely to blend seamlessly into the salad.
  • Veggies for Crunch: Add some chopped vegetables like celery, onion, and cucumber for a satisfying crunch and refreshing taste.
  • Cajun Seasoning: Use a pre-made Cajun seasoning blend or create your own with paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, and black pepper.
  • Lemon Zest and Juice: Incorporate lemon zest and juice for a burst of citrusy brightness and acidity that balances the richness of the salad.
  • Chilled Ingredients: For a more refreshing salad, chill the tuna, vegetables, and mayonnaise or Greek yogurt before assembling.
  • Serve on a Bed of Greens: Serve the Cajun tuna salad on a bed of mixed greens or lettuce for an extra layer of freshness and nutrition.

Conclusion:

This Cajun tuna salad is a delightful blend of flavors and textures that offers a delightful taste experience. With its zesty Cajun seasoning, fresh herbs, and a tangy dressing, it's sure to become a favorite for lunch, dinner, or as a quick and easy snack.
