CAIPIRINHA

Caipirinha image

It doesn't get simpler or more refreshing than a classic caipirinha, which is the national cocktail of Brazil. The sweet-tart drink calls for just three ingredients: lime, sugar, and cachaça, a sugarcane liquor that's like a smokier version of rum.

Time 5m

Yield Makes 1

Number Of Ingredients 4

1 lime
2 ounces cachaça
1 teaspoon sugar
Ice

Steps:

  • Cut lime into 6 wedges. Squeeze the wedges into an old-fashioned glass, then add wedges. Add cachaça and sugar; use a spoon to muddle. Fill glass with ice, then stir well to chill.

Tips:

  • Use fresh limes. Fresh limes are essential for a great caipirinha. The juice from fresh limes is more flavorful and aromatic than the juice from bottled or canned limes.
  • Choose a good cachaça. Cachaça is the Brazilian spirit that is used to make caipirinhas. There are many different brands of cachaça available, so it's important to choose one that is good quality. Look for a cachaça that is aged for at least two years.
  • Use plenty of sugar. Caipirinhas are typically made with a lot of sugar. This is because the sugar helps to balance out the tartness of the lime juice. If you don't like your drinks too sweet, you can reduce the amount of sugar that you use, but don't omit it entirely.
  • Muddle the ingredients well. Muddling the ingredients helps to release the flavors of the lime and the sugar. Use a wooden muddler to gently crush the lime wedges and the sugar together until the sugar has dissolved.
  • Add plenty of ice. Caipirinhas are typically served over ice. The ice helps to keep the drink cold and refreshing. Use large ice cubes or crushed ice for the best results.

Conclusion:

The caipirinha is a refreshing and flavorful cocktail that is perfect for any occasion. It's easy to make and can be customized to your own taste. So next time you're looking for a delicious and refreshing drink, give the caipirinha a try.
