Yield 8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 12

4 cups pared cored and sliced tart cooking apples
1 1/2 teaspoons lemon juice
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 (9 inch) unbaked pastry shells
6 ounces nestle toll house butterscotch chips
1/4 cup butter
3/4 cup flour
1/8 teaspoon salt
whipped cream (optional) or ice cream (optional)

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  • ---ForFilling---.
  • Mix together apples and lemon juice in a large bowl.
  • In a small bowl, mix together sugar, flour, cinnamon, and salt; pour over apples, coating apples well.
  • If using frozen pie shell, use deep-dish type, and bake on cookie sheet for 10 minutes to thaw.
  • Pour apples into pie shell.
  • Cover edges of pie crust with aluminum foil to prevent burning.
  • Bake at 375 degrees F.
  • for 20 minutes.
  • ---ForTopping---.
  • In top of double boiler, stir together morsels and butter until they are melted; remove from heat.
  • Stir in flour and salt; mix until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Remove foil from pie crust; sprinkle topping over pie.
  • Bake an additional 20-25 minutes or until crust is golden and pie is bubbly.
  • Serve warm with whipped cream or ice cream.

Tips:

  • Use a variety of apples. This will give your pie a complex flavor and texture. Some good choices include Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Braeburn.
  • Peel and slice the apples thinly. This will help them cook evenly and prevent them from becoming mushy.
  • Make sure the butter is cold when you add it to the flour mixture. This will help create a crumbly crust.
  • Don't overmix the dough. Otherwise, the crust will be tough.
  • Chill the dough for at least 30 minutes before rolling it out. This will help prevent the dough from shrinking in the oven.
  • Bake the pie at a high temperature for the first 15 minutes. This will help create a golden brown crust.
  • Reduce the oven temperature for the remaining baking time. This will help prevent the filling from overcooking.
  • Let the pie cool completely before serving. This will allow the filling to set and the flavors to meld.

Conclusion:

This butterscotch crumb apple pie is the perfect fall dessert. It's filled with sweet, tangy apples and topped with a buttery, crumbly crust. The butterscotch sauce adds a rich, decadent flavor that takes this pie to the next level. Whether you're serving it for a special occasion or just a weeknight treat, this pie is sure to be a hit.
