- Grease the bottom only of a 10-in. springform pan; set aside. In a large bowl, cream shortening and 1-1/2 cups sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg yolks and vanilla. Combine the flour, baking soda, cinnamon and salt; add to the creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk, beating well after each addition. Transfer to prepared pan., Bake at 325° for 50-55 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Remove from the oven; increase heat to 375°., In a small bowl, beat egg whites and cream of tartar on medium speed until soft peaks form.
