SESAME RICE

This is how I love my brown rice. I always use short grain rice, adding about 1/2 cup more water than called for. With a splash of soy sauce, I'm in heaven!

Provided by Sharon123

Categories     Brown Rice

Time 1h

Yield 6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 cup brown rice
1 1/2 teaspoons dark toasted sesame oil
1 1/2 cups water
1/3 cup minced scallion
2 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds
2 -3 teaspoons soy sauce, to taste

Steps:

  • In a saucepan with a tight-fitting lid, toss the rice with 1/2 teaspoons of the sesame oil to coat the grains.
  • Add the water, cover, and bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer until the rice is tender, about 40 to 45 minutes.
  • Stir in the scallions, sesame seeds, the remaining sesame oil, and soy sauce to taste.
  • Enjoy!
  • Note:.
  • Toast sesame seeds in a single layer on an unoiled baking tray at 350*F for 2 to 3 minutes, until fragrant and golden.
  • Watch carefully, so as not to burn!

Tips:

  • Cook brown rice perfectly: Add twice the amount of water as rice and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 45 minutes or until all the water is absorbed and the rice is tender. Remove from heat and let stand covered for 5 minutes before fluffing with a fork.
  • Toast the sesame seeds: Heat a small skillet over medium heat. Add sesame seeds and toast for 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly, until fragrant. Be careful not to burn them.
  • Use high-quality soy sauce: Opt for a Japanese soy sauce for the best flavor. Look for varieties labeled "koikuchi" or "shoyu", which are known for their rich, savory taste.
  • Add vegetables for a more nutritious dish: Feel free to incorporate your favorite vegetables along with the rice. Steamed broccoli, sauteed mushrooms, or chopped bell peppers are all great options.
  • Experiment with different seasonings: Besides sesame seeds and soy sauce, try adding other seasonings like garlic, ginger, or chili flakes to taste.
