WHOLE RICE AND LENTILS (MAJADARA)

Whole Rice and Lentils (Majadara) image

One of my 'Israeli' recipes that I've adapted for whole rice (that in my opinion needs more seasoning). Good as a whole meal or as a side dish. Freezes fairly well, too.

Number Of Ingredients 11

¼ cup olive oil

3 cloves garlic, chopped
1 teaspoon chopped fresh ginger root

1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon ground black pepper

Tips:

  • Choose the right lentils. Brown lentils are a good all-purpose choice, but you can also use green or black lentils.
  • Rinse the lentils before cooking. This will help to remove any dirt or debris.
  • Use a large pot. The lentils will expand as they cook, so make sure you have a pot that is large enough to accommodate them.
  • Add aromatics. Onion, garlic, and ginger are all great additions to brown rice and lentils. You can also add other vegetables, such as carrots, celery, or bell peppers.
  • Use a flavorful broth. Vegetable broth or chicken broth will add a lot of flavor to the dish. You can also use water, but it will be less flavorful.
  • Cook the lentils until they are tender. This will usually take about 20-30 minutes. You can check the lentils by tasting them. They should be soft, but still hold their shape.
  • Fluff the rice and lentils with a fork before serving. This will help to separate the grains and make them light and fluffy.

Conclusion:

Brown rice and lentils is a healthy and delicious dish that is perfect for a quick and easy meal. It is also a great way to use up leftover rice and lentils. With a few simple ingredients and a little bit of time, you can have a delicious and nutritious meal that the whole family will enjoy.
