1 2/3 c cornstarch
6 Tbsp beef bouillon powder (low sodium)
4 tsp instant coffee powder
2 tsp onion powder
1 Tbsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp pepper
1/2 tsp paprika

Steps:

  • 1. Combine all ingredients in a large bowl
  • 2. Mix slowly, as it is really poofy .
  • 3. Store in an airtight container.
  • 4. Add 3 tablespoons of this mix to 1 1/2 cups water into a pan and bring to a boil.. turn down heat and simmer for 1 to 2 minutes. Sometimes I will add a tablespoon of butter to this gravy.
  • 5. I usually double this if I am making gravy with slices of beef, pork or venison because I like this for leftovers.
  • 6. This makes a wonderful tasting gravy but you can add other spices or you can add a little leftover coffee or kitchen bouquet to your gravy for added color and flavor..if you want.

BROWN GRAVY MIX

I like this recipe because I can control the amount of sodium in it. The packaged mixes on the market contain enormous amounts of salt. I use low sodium beef bouillon. This makes a single recipe, but you can use the calculator to make a larger recipe and have it stored in your cupboard ready to use. This is nice made in the pan after you've browned meat.

Tips:

  • Use a flavorful base: The base of your gravy is what will give it its rich, savory flavor. Use a combination of browned meat drippings, sautéed vegetables, and/or a flavorful stock or broth.
  • Don't be afraid to add seasonings: Gravy is a great place to experiment with your favorite seasonings. Garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, thyme, and rosemary are all classic additions. You can also add a splash of Worcestershire sauce or soy sauce for extra flavor.
  • Cook the gravy slowly: Gravy should be cooked slowly over low heat to allow the flavors to develop and deepen. This will also help to prevent the gravy from burning or scorching.
  • Thicken the gravy with a roux or cornstarch: If your gravy is too thin, you can thicken it with a roux (a mixture of equal parts butter and flour) or cornstarch. Be sure to whisk the roux or cornstarch into the gravy until it is smooth and lump-free.
  • Season to taste: Once the gravy is thickened, taste it and adjust the seasonings as needed. You may want to add more salt, pepper, or other seasonings to taste.

Conclusion:

Brown gravy is a versatile and flavorful sauce that can be used to enhance a variety of dishes. Whether you're serving it with roasted chicken, mashed potatoes, or vegetables, brown gravy is sure to be a hit. With a few simple tips, you can make a delicious brown gravy that will impress your family and friends.
