My niece, Marianne Lintner, gave this recipe to me many years ago and it has stood the test of time very well. A good hearty meal for a cold winter night.

Steps:
- 1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees
- 2. Spray 9 X 13" baking dish with non-stick cooking spray
- 3. Grate 3 cups of cheddar cheese and thaw 1 pkg of frozen broccoli
- 4. Mix crust ingredients together and pat into baking dish and up the sides about 1/4"
- 5. Brown ground beef then add rest of ingredients for filling
- 6. Pour beef and cheese mixture over crust and even out with a spatula
- 7. Sprinkle frozen broccoli evenly over top of beef mixture
- 8. Beat together topping ingredients and pour over beef mixture
- 9. Bake for 25 - 30 minutes until edges are golden brown
- 10. Cut into squares and serve. Great leftover and easy to freeze
Tips:
- Use fresh broccoli: Fresh broccoli florets are more tender and flavorful than frozen ones. If you're using frozen broccoli, be sure to thaw it completely before cooking.
- Cut the beef against the grain: This will help the beef cook more evenly and make it more tender.
- Don't overcrowd the pan when cooking the beef: If you overcrowd the pan, the beef will steam instead of sear, resulting in tough, chewy meat.
- Use a high-quality soy sauce: A good soy sauce will add a lot of flavor to the dish. Look for a soy sauce that is made with whole soybeans and has a rich, umami flavor.
- Serve the broccoli beef squares with your favorite sides: Rice, noodles, or vegetables are all great options.
Conclusion:
Broccoli beef squares are a quick and easy weeknight meal that is packed with flavor. The beef is tender and flavorful, the broccoli is crisp and tender, and the sauce is rich and savory. This dish is sure to please the whole family.
