MAPLE SAUSAGE BREAKFAST BRAID

Maple Sausage Breakfast Braid image

Time 1h

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 pound package of maple pork sausage
1/4 cup real maple syrup + extra for topping
2 eggs
1/4 cup sliced green onions
1 1/2 cups herb stuffing mix - dry, not cook. Make sure to get bread crumbs AND seasoning too!
2 large granny smith apples, diced
1 (17 ounce) package Puff Pastry sheets, thawed

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 400*F In a large bowl combine sausage, syrup, eggs, green onions, stuffing mix and apples. Mix well with spatula and or hands and set aside. I find hands work great for this! Roll out each pastry sheet to a 16 x 12 inch rectangle on a baking mat, parchment paper or nonstick foil. Place half of the sausage mixture down the center of one of the pastry sheets. Fold up each end of pastry sheet to cover edges at each end of sausage. Slice 1 inch slits down both sides of pastry then fold up strips on top of sausage, alternating sides like a braid. Transfer braid to a cookie sheet. Repeat the above steps for second pastry sheet and braid. Bake for 30 - 40 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from oven and allow to sit for 5 minutes before cutting into slices. Drizzle with additional maple syrup and enjoy!

JALAPENO, SAUSAGE, JACK, AND EGG BREAKFAST BRAID

Jalapeno, Sausage, Jack, and Egg Breakfast Braid image

This is a delicious recipe that is easy to make. It was orginally in the January 2010 issue of Cooking Light, but I made a couple of changes, so the ratio of bread to filling would be a bit more even. I also use whatever cheese I have on hand, usually (whatever you'd put in an omelet). Even if your sausage is fully cooked, don't hesitate to brown it with the onions, because it brings out the flavor that much more. This is easy to make for breakfast or brunch. We sometimes have this as "breakfast for dinner" with roasted ranch potatoes, and we can have leftovers for breakfast the next morning!

Tips:

  • Prep ahead: For a quick and easy breakfast, prepare the dough and filling the night before and refrigerate overnight. In the morning, simply braid and bake.
  • Use a variety of fillings: Get creative with your fillings! Some popular options include cinnamon sugar, apple pie filling, Nutella, and berries. You can also use savory fillings, such as cheese, bacon, or sausage.
  • Don't overwork the dough: Overworking the dough will make it tough. Mix it just until the ingredients are combined.
  • Let the dough rise in a warm place: This will help it double in size and become light and fluffy.
  • Brush the braid with egg wash before baking: This will give it a golden brown crust.
  • Serve warm: Breakfast braid is best served warm, but it can also be enjoyed cold.
