Yield Serves 2

Number Of Ingredients 7

2 cube steaks (about 3/4 pound total)
1 1/2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 large onion, sliced thin
1/2 teaspoon freshly grated orange zest
1 garlic clove, minced
1/3 cup low-salt beef broth
1 1/2 teaspoons soy sauce

Steps:

  • Pat steaks dry between paper towels and season with salt and pepper. In a heavy skillet heat oil over moderately high heat until hot but not smoking and brown steaks. Transfer steaks with tongs to a plate and in drippings remaining in skillet cook onion over moderate heat, stirring, until softened. Stir in zest and garlic and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add broth, soy sauce, and steaks and simmer, uncovered, until steaks are tender, about 5 minutes.

Tips:

  • Choose the Right Cut of Meat: Cube steak is a great choice for braising because it is a tough cut of meat that becomes tender when cooked slowly in liquid.
  • Tenderize the Meat: Pounding the meat with a meat mallet helps to break down the tough fibers and make it more tender.
  • Brown the Meat: Browning the meat in a skillet before braising adds flavor and color to the dish.
  • Use a Dutch Oven or Slow Cooker: A Dutch oven or slow cooker is a great choice for braising cube steak because it allows the meat to cook slowly and evenly.
  • Add Vegetables and Seasonings: Vegetables such as onions, carrots, and celery add flavor to the braising liquid. Seasonings such as salt, pepper, and garlic powder also help to enhance the flavor of the dish.
  • Cook the Meat Until Tender: The meat should be cooked until it is fall-apart tender. This can take anywhere from 1 to 3 hours, depending on the cut of meat and the cooking method.
  • Serve with Mashed Potatoes or Rice: Mashed potatoes or rice are a great side dish for braised cube steak.

Conclusion:

Braised cube steak is a delicious and affordable meal that can be easily prepared in a Dutch oven or slow cooker. By following these tips, you can make a flavorful and tender braised cube steak that your family and friends will love.
