THE BOULEVARDIER

The Boulevardier image

A marvel of a cocktail with an enviably colorful peerage, the Boulevardier is effectively a cross between a Manhattan and a Negroni. In colder months, it's a magnificent drink to have as a fallback when you want something richer and more complex than just a whiskey but can never seem to think of what else to order. It's composed of two parts American whiskey, with one part each of sweet vermouth and Campari. Taken one way, it's a Manhattan with a portion of Campari swapped in for the regular few drops of Angostura or other aromatic bitters. Seen the other way, it's a Negroni with whiskey in place of the gin.

ANY-SPIRIT NEGRONI

Any-Spirit Negroni image

This take on the classic drink uses a combination of sweet and dry vermouths in the standard gin-vermouth-red bitter formula, adding depth and character. The vermouths are paired with the spirit of your choice for an adaptable drink that puts whatever bottles you prefer or have on hand to work. If you're not a fan of the traditional gin, rum, tequila or bourbon or rye whiskeys are all great here.

NEGRONI

Negroni image

This is the classic Italian way to open a meal: the Negroni, a bittersweet palate cleanser that makes way for the evening's delights. Adding a bottle of Campari to the liquor cabinet opens up a world of cocktail possibilities. In any case, drink this cold. This version came to us from Jim Meehan, a bartender and an owner of Please Don't Tell, a speakeasy in the East Village. (The New York Times)

Tips:

  • Use high-quality ingredients: The quality of your ingredients will greatly impact the taste of your Negroni. Use a good quality bourbon, gin, and sweet vermouth. If you can, try to find a Negroni-specific vermouth, as these are often made with a blend of herbs and spices that complement the other ingredients in the cocktail.
  • Don't over-stir: When stirring your Negroni, be careful not to over-stir it. Over-stirring can dilute the cocktail and make it watery. Stir just enough to combine the ingredients.
  • Garnish with an orange twist: A classic Negroni is garnished with an orange twist. This adds a bright citrus flavor to the cocktail and helps to balance out the bitterness of the gin and vermouth.
  • Experiment with different variations: There are many different ways to make a Negroni. You can try using different types of gin, vermouth, or bourbon. You can also add other ingredients, such as fruit juices, bitters, or herbs.

Conclusion:

The Negroni is a classic cocktail that is enjoyed by people all over the world. It is a simple cocktail to make, but it can be tricky to get it just right. By following the tips in this article, you can make a perfect Negroni that you will enjoy time and time again.
