**Classic Blue Cheese and Apple Coleslaw:**
This timeless recipe strikes a perfect balance between creamy and tangy flavors. Freshly shredded cabbage and crisp green apples provide a delightful crunch, while crumbled blue cheese adds a savory sharpness. A creamy dressing, made with mayonnaise, sour cream, Dijon mustard, and a touch of sweetness, ties all the elements together, creating a coleslaw that is both satisfying and refreshing.
**Bacon and Blue Cheese Apple Coleslaw:**
For those who love the smoky, salty goodness of bacon, this recipe is a must-try. Crispy bacon bits add an irresistible crunch and extra flavor to the classic blue cheese and apple coleslaw. The combination of sweet apples, tangy blue cheese, and smoky bacon creates a harmonious blend of flavors that is sure to be a hit at any gathering.
**Curried Blue Cheese and Apple Coleslaw:**
This recipe adds an unexpected twist to the classic coleslaw with the introduction of curry powder. The subtle warmth and aromatic spices of curry elevate the flavors of blue cheese and apples, creating a coleslaw that is both refreshing and subtly exotic. The creamy dressing, infused with curry powder, yogurt, and honey, adds a touch of sweetness and tang, making this coleslaw a delightful accompaniment to grilled meats or fish.
**Additional Tips:**
- Enhance the flavors of your coleslaw by using a variety of apple types. Granny Smith apples provide a tartness that complements the blue cheese, while sweeter apples, such as Honeycrisp or Gala, add a touch of sweetness.
- Experiment with different types of blue cheese to create unique flavor profiles. Sharp blue cheeses, such as Roquefort or Stilton, add a bold and assertive flavor, while milder blue cheeses, such as Gorgonzola or Cambozola, offer a more subtle touch.
- For a healthier alternative, use Greek yogurt or low-fat mayonnaise in the dressing. You can also reduce the amount of dressing used without compromising the flavor.
- Serve the coleslaw chilled for a refreshing side dish that is perfect for summer gatherings, picnics, or potlucks.
Embark on a culinary adventure with these blue cheese and apple coleslaw recipes. Experiment with different ingredients and flavors to create a coleslaw that perfectly suits your taste preferences. Steps:
- Cut the cabbages in half and then in quarters and cut out the cores. Set up the food processor with the slicing blade (according to manufacturer's instructions) and place the pieces of cabbage, one at a time, lying horizontally in the feed tube. (If they don't fit, cut them to fit lying down.) Place the feed tube pusher on top and turn on the processor. Don't push on the feed tube pusher or the slices will turn out too thick! Continue with the remaining red and green cabbage quarters. Transfer into a large bowl, discarding any very large pieces. Before you pour the dressing on the salad, save a handful of the grated vegetables to decorate for serving. Change the slicing blade for the large shredding blade and cut the carrots so they also lie down in the feed tube. Since the carrots are hard, replace the feed tube pusher and press firmly with the food processor on. Transfer to bowl with the cabbages.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, both mustards, vinegar, celery salt, kosher salt, and pepper. Pour enough mayonnaise dressing over the grated vegetables and toss to moisten well. Add crumbled blue cheese and parsley and toss together. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for several hours to allow the flavors to meld. Serve cold or at room temperature.
