WATERMELON MINT SMOOTHIE

Watermelon Mint Smoothie image

I'm always tossing watermelon with fresh mint, so I decided to see how the two would blend in a smoothie. The result is like a cross between a sweet mint tea and a watermelon agua fresca.

DEEP PURPLE BLUEBERRY SMOOTHIE WITH BLACK QUINOA

Deep Purple Blueberry Smoothie With Black Quinoa image

My idea for this week's Recipes for Health was to match grains and fruit by color and make nourishing smoothies. For this one I could have also used any of the black or purple rices on the market, such as Alter Eco's purple jasmine rice, Lotus Food's Forbidden Rice or Lundberg Black Japonica. I happened to have a full bag of black quinoa in the pantry, so that's what I went for and it worked beautifully. You can also use fresh blueberries for this, but when they are not in season, frozen will do fine and will eliminate the need for ice cubes.

Tips:

  • Choose ripe blood oranges: Look for oranges with deep red skin and no blemishes. The riper the oranges, the sweeter and more flavorful the smoothie will be.
  • Use frozen grapes: Frozen grapes add a cool, refreshing texture to the smoothie. You can also use fresh grapes, but they will not be as cold.
  • Rinse the red quinoa thoroughly: Rinsing the quinoa will remove any saponins, which are bitter compounds that can give the quinoa a soapy taste.
  • Add a little honey or maple syrup: If you like your smoothies sweeter, you can add a little honey or maple syrup to taste.
  • Serve immediately: Smoothies are best enjoyed fresh. If you need to make it ahead of time, store it in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.

Conclusion:

This blood orange smoothie with grapes and red quinoa is a delicious and nutritious way to start your day. It's packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, and it's also a good source of protein and fiber. The smoothie is also easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste preferences. So next time you're looking for a healthy and refreshing breakfast or snack, give this blood orange smoothie a try.
