A friend gave this to me because she knows I love black walnuts in anything. They are much like other Christmas cookies you make with pecans in them. But these are GREAT!!

GERMAN BLACK WALNUT BALLS

German Black Walnut Balls image

This is an old recipe that my Gramps used to make (Great Grandpa). The cookies are not really sweet, but the flavor is wonderful all the same. It's definitely more of an adult cookie. I am guessing on the servings, so please let me know how many cookies it makes and I will post the correction. (I can't make them anymore with regular wheat flour since I have to make everything gluten free) UPDATE: I asked my mom if she ever substituted anything for the brandy and she said she rarely included it and just increased the vanilla to a tsp.

Tips:

  • Use fresh black walnuts. Fresh walnuts have a stronger flavor and will produce a richer, more delicious filling. If you can't find fresh walnuts, you can use dried walnuts, but be sure to soak them in water for at least 30 minutes before using.
  • Toast the walnuts before using. Toasting the walnuts will enhance their flavor and make them more fragrant. To toast the walnuts, spread them out on a baking sheet and bake them at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 10-12 minutes, or until they are lightly browned and fragrant.
  • Use a food processor to chop the walnuts. A food processor will make quick and easy work of chopping the walnuts. Be sure to chop the walnuts until they are finely ground, but not too fine, or the filling will be too pasty.
  • Add a variety of spices to the filling. Spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves will add warmth and flavor to the filling. You can also add a pinch of salt to balance out the sweetness.
  • Chill the filling before using. Chilling the filling will make it easier to work with and will help it to hold its shape.
  • Use a small cookie scoop to form the balls. A small cookie scoop will help you to make uniform-sized balls. Be sure to roll the balls tightly so that they don't fall apart.
  • Coat the balls in melted chocolate. Melted chocolate will give the balls a rich, decadent flavor and will help them to stay together. You can use dark chocolate, milk chocolate, or white chocolate, depending on your preference.
  • Chill the balls before serving. Chilling the balls will help the chocolate to set and will make them easier to eat.

Conclusion:

Black walnut balls are a delicious and festive treat that are perfect for any occasion. They are easy to make and can be customized to your liking. With a few simple tips, you can make black walnut balls that are sure to impress your friends and family.
