Time 1h15m

Yield 4

Number Of Ingredients 11

½ cup soy sauce (such as Kikkoman®)
¼ cup lime juice
3 cloves garlic, smashed
2 teaspoons white sugar
1 teaspoon fish sauce
ground black pepper to taste
1 pound beef steak, sliced 1/4-inch thick
2 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided, or as needed
4 potatoes, cut into wedges
1 large onion, cut into rings
⅛ cup water

Steps:

  • Combine soy sauce, lime juice, garlic, sugar, fish sauce, and pepper in a bowl. Taste and adjust to your liking. Add sliced beef, making sure it is coated evenly. Marinate for at least 30 minutes or up to 1 hour.
  • Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a wok or pan over medium-high heat. Fry potatoes in the hot oil until the edges turn golden brown, 7 to 10 minutes. Transfer to a plate.
  • Heat remaining oil in the same pan over medium-high heat and fry onions until edges turn brown, 7 to 10 minutes. Transfer to the same plate.
  • Heat the same pan over medium-high heat. Reserve marinade and fry beef in batches, adding more vegetable oil if necessary, until browned and no longer pink in the centers, 5 to 7 minutes. Transfer to the plate and continue with remaining beef.
  • Pour the reserved marinade into the pan with water to deglaze, scraping up the browned bits from the bottom of the pan using a wooden spoon. Taste and adjust seasonings. Return beef back to the pan with some onion, leaving remaining onion for garnish; reduce heat and let simmer until sauce has thickened, 7 to 10 minutes.
  • Slide beef and sauce onto a serving plate. Garnish with remaining onion. Place potatoes on the side and serve.

Time 20m

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 lb beef sirloin, thinly sliced
1/4 can(s) soy sauce, dark
3 calamansi
1/2 tsp black pepper
3 clove garlic
1 large onions, vidalia, slicrd into rings
3 Tbsp cooking oil
salt to taste

Steps:

  • 1. Marinade beef in soy sauce, calamansi(or use lemon/lime combination), and ground black pepper for at least 1 hour
  • 2. Heat the cooking oil in a pan then stir fry the onion rings until the texture becomes soft. Set aside
  • 3. In the same pan where the onions were fried, fry the marinated beef (without the marinade) until color turns brown. Set aside
  • 4. Put-in the garlic then sauté for a few minutes
  • 5. Pour the marinade and bring to a boil.
  • 6. Put in the fried beef and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes or until meat is tender. Add water as needed.
  • 7. Add the stir-fried onions and some salt to taste.
  • 8. Serve hot. Share and Enjoy!

Tips:

  • Choose the right cut of beef: Flank steak, sirloin steak, or ribeye steak are recommended for this recipe because they are tender and flavorful cuts.
  • Tenderize the beef: To make the beef more tender, you can use a meat mallet or a fork to pound it before cooking. You can also marinate the beef in a mixture of soy sauce, garlic, and onion for 30 minutes to an hour before cooking.
  • Use a hot pan: When cooking the beef, make sure the pan is hot before adding the meat. This will help to sear the meat and lock in the juices.
  • Cook the beef to your desired doneness: The cooking time will depend on the thickness of the beef and how you like it cooked. For a medium-rare steak, cook for 3-4 minutes per side. For a medium steak, cook for 4-5 minutes per side. For a well-done steak, cook for 5-6 minutes per side.
  • Let the beef rest before slicing: After cooking the beef, let it rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing. This will allow the juices to redistribute throughout the meat, making it more tender and flavorful.

Conclusion:

Bistek Filipino is a quick and easy dish to make, and it is a great way to enjoy a delicious and flavorful beef steak. This dish is perfect for a weeknight meal or a special occasion. With the right ingredients and a little bit of care, you can make a bistek Filipino that your family and friends will love.
