Categories     Salad     Leafy Green     Fourth of July     Thanksgiving     Vegetarian     Quick & Easy     Mother's Day     Winter     Gourmet

Yield Serves 4

Number Of Ingredients 4

1/2 pound Bibb lettuce (about 4 heads) or Boston lettuce (about 1 head)
1 garlic clove
1/2 stick (1/4 cup) unsalted butter
4 teaspoons fresh lemon juice

Steps:

  • Separate lettuce leaves and put in a large bowl. Halve garlic and in a small heavy skillet heat with butter over moderate heat, stirring occasionally, until garlic is golden and butter has a slight nutty aroma, about 3 minutes. Remove skillet from heat and discard garlic. Add lemon juice and salt and pepper to taste, swirling skillet to incorporate (butter will foam).
  • Pour warm dressing over lettuce and toss to coat. Serve salad immediately.

Tips:

  • Select the freshest and highest quality ingredients: Use ripe, colorful Bibb lettuce, crisp radishes, sweet strawberries, and crunchy almonds.
  • Prepare the dressing ahead of time: The buttermilk-pepper dressing can be made up to 2 days in advance, allowing the flavors to meld and intensify.
  • Chill the salad before serving: This helps the flavors come together and keeps the lettuce crisp.
  • Use a light hand when dressing the salad: You don't want to weigh down the delicate Bibb lettuce with too much dressing.
  • Serve immediately: Bibb salad is best enjoyed fresh, as the lettuce can wilt if it sits for too long.

Conclusion:

A delightful and refreshing salad, the Bibb salad with buttermilk-pepper dressing is a perfect balance of flavors and textures. The sweet strawberries, crisp radishes, and crunchy almonds complement the tender Bibb lettuce, while the tangy buttermilk-pepper dressing adds a zesty kick. This salad is a great way to enjoy the bounty of fresh produce available during the summer months. Whether served as a light lunch, a side dish, or a starter, this salad is sure to impress.
