STEEL CUT OATMEAL FOR THE CROCK POT

Steel Cut Oatmeal for the Crock Pot image

I love the texture of steel cut oats. You can make this the night before and breakfast is ready in the morning. I like fruit additions, but my kids do not, so I've listed them as optional. Also, it may sound like a lot of water, but trust me, I've experimented..

Categories     Breakfast

Time 6h5m

Yield 3-4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 cup steel cut oats (DO NOT substitute old-fashioned or quick-cooking oats)
4 1/2 cups water
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 -3 tablespoons butter
1/2 cup dried fruit (raisins, prunes, apricots, dates) (optional)
milk, to taste
sugar, to taste
cinnamon, to taste
maple syrup, to taste

Steps:

  • Place all ingredients in a 2 quart slow cooker. (If you want to make a smaller amount please use a smaller crock pot or crockette. This won't work in a 6 quart cooker).
  • Cover and cook on LOW 6-8 hours.
  • It might form a "crust" around the outside. Just scrape it down with a spoon and stir.

Tips:

  • Use the right oats: Steel-cut oats are the best choice for crock pot oatmeal because they hold their shape and texture well during the long cooking time. Avoid using rolled oats or quick oats, as they will become mushy.
  • Measure your ingredients carefully: The ratio of oats to liquid is important for getting the right consistency. Too much liquid will result in runny oatmeal, while too little liquid will result in dry oatmeal.
  • Don't overcook the oatmeal: Oatmeal can easily be overcooked in a crock pot, so it's important to cook it for the minimum amount of time necessary. Overcooked oatmeal will become gummy and lose its flavor.
  • Add your favorite toppings: Oatmeal is a versatile dish that can be topped with a variety of ingredients, such as fresh fruit, nuts, seeds, and sweeteners. Get creative and experiment with different toppings to find your favorite combination.

Conclusion:

Steel-cut oats cooked in a crock pot are a delicious and easy way to start your day. With a little planning, you can have a hot, hearty breakfast waiting for you when you wake up. Simply combine the oats, liquid, and seasonings in your crock pot before bed, and let it cook overnight on low. In the morning, you'll have a delicious and nutritious breakfast that will keep you going all day long.
