Yield 6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 (10 1/2 ounce) can campbells French onion soup
1 1/2 lbs ground beef
1/2 cup dry breadcrumbs
1 egg
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper, to taste
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
1/4 cup ketchup
1 -3 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, to taste
1/2 teaspoon mustard powder
1/4 cup water

  • In a large bowl, mix together 1/3 cup condensed French onion soup with ground beef, bread crumbs, egg, salt and black pepper.
  • Shape into 6 oval patties.
  • In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown both sides of patties.

  • In a small bowl, blend flour and remaining soup until smooth.
  • Mix in ketchup, water, Worcestershire sauce and mustard powder.
  • Pour over meat in skillet.
  • Cover, and cook for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Tips:

  • Choose the right ground beef. Use a blend of 80% lean and 20% fat ground beef for the best flavor and texture.
  • Season the beef well. Use a combination of salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and Worcestershire sauce to flavor the beef.
  • Don't overwork the beef. Mix the ingredients together just until they are combined. Overworking the beef will make it tough.
  • Form the beef into patties. Make the patties about 1/2-inch thick and 3 inches in diameter.
  • Brown the patties in a skillet. Cook the patties over medium-high heat for 3-4 minutes per side, or until they are browned on both sides.
  • Make the gravy. While the patties are cooking, make the gravy in the same skillet. Use a combination of beef broth, tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and spices.
  • Simmer the patties in the gravy. Once the gravy is simmering, add the patties back to the skillet and simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through.
