Some years ago, I was a cook on a large cattle ranch. One day, I thought back to the hush puppies I'd had as a child on a southern trip, and I ended up creating my own version of them. They go well as part of an old-fashioned fried chicken dinner with mashed potatoes and gravy, buttermilk biscuits, corn on the cob and watermelon pickles! -Karyl Goodhart, Geraldine, Montana

Tips:

  • Use cold beer: Cold beer helps to create a light and fluffy batter. If you don't have cold beer, you can chill it in the refrigerator for 30 minutes before using.
  • Don't overmix the batter: Overmixing the batter will make the hushpuppies tough. Mix just until the ingredients are combined.
  • Use a well-seasoned cast iron skillet: A well-seasoned cast iron skillet will help to create a crispy exterior on the hushpuppies. If you don't have a cast iron skillet, you can use a regular skillet, but make sure to grease it well.
  • Cook the hushpuppies until they are golden brown: Cook the hushpuppies for 3-4 minutes per side, or until they are golden brown. Don't overcrowd the skillet, or the hushpuppies will not cook evenly.
  • Serve the hushpuppies hot: Hushpuppies are best served hot, with your favorite dipping sauce.

Conclusion:

Hushpuppies are a delicious and versatile side dish that can be enjoyed with a variety of meals. They are easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste preferences. Whether you like them spicy, cheesy, or classic, there is a hushpuppy recipe out there for you. So next time you are looking for a side dish to wow your guests, give hushpuppies a try.
