2 cups (400 g) granulated sugar
¾ cup (90 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1 cup (240 g) buttermilk, (room temperature)
2 large eggs, (at room temperature)

  • Pour the batter into two 8-inch round prepared pans and bake for 30-40 minutes at 350°F, until a cake tester or toothpick comes out mostly clean (not wet).
  • Cool in the pans for about 10 minutes, then turn them out onto a cooling rack and cool completely.

Excellent chocolate cake from scratch with a twist. The coffee adds an extra dimension to the flavor. This has been everyone's favorite for years. A great recipe when paired with a cream cheese frosting. Very moist and enjoyable. You won't go back to a boxed cake again. Also makes great cupcakes.

Tips:

  • For a moist and fluffy cake, use cake flour instead of all-purpose flour.
  • Make sure all your ingredients are at room temperature before you start baking. This will help them to blend together more easily and create a smoother batter.
  • Do not overmix the batter. Overmixing can make the cake tough.
  • Bake the cake in a preheated oven. This will help to ensure that the cake rises evenly.
  • Do not open the oven door during the first 30 minutes of baking. This can cause the cake to fall.
  • Let the cake cool completely before frosting it. This will help to prevent the frosting from melting.
