¼ cup white sugar
1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Number Of Ingredients 15

PUDDING:
4 cups white bread, cubed, about 8 slices
1/2 cup raisins
2 cups milk
1/4 cup butter
1/2 cup sugar
2 eggs, slightly beaten
1 tablespoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
SAUCE:
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
1 tablespoon vanilla

Steps:

  • PUDDING: Heat oven to 350°F. Combine bread and raisins in large bowl. Combine milk and 1/4 cup butter in 1-quart saucepan. Cook over medium heat until butter is melted, about 4 to 7 minutes. Pour milk mixture over bread; let stand 10 minutes. Stir in all remaining pudding ingredients. Pour into greased 1 1/2-quart casserole. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes or until set in center. SAUCE: Combine all sauce ingredients except vanilla in 1-quart saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally until mixture thickens and comes to a full boil, about 5 to 8 minutes. Stir in vanilla. To serve, spoon warm pudding into individual dessert dishes; serve with sauce. Store any leftovers in the refrigerator.

Tips:

  • Use high-quality bread. Stale or dry bread will result in a dry bread pudding. For the best results, use a day-old French bread or challah.
  • Don't overmix the batter. Overmixing will result in a tough bread pudding. Mix the ingredients just until they are combined.
  • Use a large baking dish. A 9x13 inch baking dish is the perfect size for this recipe. A smaller dish will result in a thicker, denser bread pudding.
  • Bake the bread pudding in a water bath. This will help to keep the bread pudding moist and prevent it from drying out.
  • Let the bread pudding cool for at least 15 minutes before serving. This will allow the flavors to meld and the pudding to set.

Conclusion:

Bread pudding is a classic comfort food that is easy to make and always a crowd-pleaser. With its rich, custard-like texture and warm, inviting spices, bread pudding is the perfect dessert for any occasion. Whether you are serving it for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, bread pudding is sure to be a hit. So next time you are looking for a simple and delicious dessert, give bread pudding a try. You won't be disappointed!
