Time 40m

Yield 8-10 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 7

3 cups flour
3 tablespoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup sugar
1 cup milk
1 egg
1/2 cup margarine or 1/2 cup shortening

Steps:

  • Mix all the dry ingredients together.
  • Cut the margarine or shortening into the dry ingredients until the mixture is crumbly.
  • Add the milk and egg and stir until well combined.
  • Shape pieces of dough into 5-6 inch circles.
  • They should be about 1/2 an inch thick.
  • You then fry them in oil that comes atleast halfway up the side of the johnny bread.
  • It should be a low to medium flame; too high and the outside will burn and the inside will still be doughy.
  • They're done when they're golden brown on both sides.
  • Depending on their thickness, it could take anywhere from 3-5 minutes per side.
  • Drain on paper towels when done.
  • Enjoy!

Tips:

  • Select the Right Ingredients: Ensure you use high-quality all-purpose flour, active dry yeast, sugar, salt, butter, and lukewarm milk. Fresh ingredients contribute to the best results.
  • Activate the Yeast Properly: Activate the yeast by dissolving it in lukewarm milk with a pinch of sugar. Allow it to rest for 5-10 minutes until it becomes foamy. This ensures the yeast is active and ready to leaven the dough.
  • Knead the Dough Thoroughly: Knead the dough for at least 5-7 minutes on a lightly floured surface. Proper kneading develops gluten, giving your Johnny bread a chewy texture.
  • Proof the Dough: Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover it with plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about an hour or until it doubles in size. This allows the yeast to work its magic and produce a light and airy bread.
  • Shape and Bake: Divide the risen dough into equal portions, shape them into rounds, and place them on a greased baking sheet. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.

Conclusion:

With careful attention to detail and a bit of culinary creativity, you can master the art of making delicious Bermuda Johnny bread that will delight your taste buds and become a staple in your Caribbean-inspired cuisine.
