Time 40m

Yield 8-10 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 7

3 cups flour
3 tablespoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup sugar
1 cup milk
1 egg
1/2 cup margarine or 1/2 cup shortening

Steps:

  • Mix all the dry ingredients together.
  • Cut the margarine or shortening into the dry ingredients until the mixture is crumbly.
  • Add the milk and egg and stir until well combined.
  • Shape pieces of dough into 5-6 inch circles.
  • They should be about 1/2 an inch thick.
  • You then fry them in oil that comes atleast halfway up the side of the johnny bread.
  • It should be a low to medium flame; too high and the outside will burn and the inside will still be doughy.
  • They're done when they're golden brown on both sides.
  • Depending on their thickness, it could take anywhere from 3-5 minutes per side.
  • Drain on paper towels when done.
  • Enjoy!

Tips:

  • Use fresh ingredients: Fresh ingredients will result in a better-tasting bread. Use fresh milk, eggs, and butter. If you can, use local, organic ingredients as well.
  • Proof the yeast: Proofing the yeast is an important step that helps to ensure that the bread will rise properly. To proof the yeast, dissolve it in warm water and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes foamy.
  • Knead the dough properly: Kneading the dough is an important step that helps to develop the gluten in the flour. This will result in a bread that is chewy and has a good texture. Knead the dough for at least 5-7 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.
  • Let the dough rise in a warm place: The dough needs to rise in a warm place in order to double in size. This will typically take about 1-2 hours. You can either let the dough rise in a warm oven or in a warm spot in your kitchen.
  • Bake the bread at a high temperature: Baking the bread at a high temperature will help to create a crispy crust. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit before baking the bread.

Conclusion:

Bermuda Johnny Bread is a delicious and easy-to-make bread that is perfect for any occasion. It is a versatile bread that can be served with a variety of dishes.
