Tips:

  • To ensure your dough rises properly, activate the yeast in warm water (105-115°F) with a pinch of sugar before adding it to the other ingredients.
  • Work the butter into the dough until it is fully incorporated and resembles coarse crumbs. This will create flaky, tender layers in your braid.
  • Do not overwork the dough, as this can make it tough. Mix the ingredients until they just come together.
  • When braiding the dough, stretch it gently to prevent it from tearing. Pinch the ends of the braid together to seal it.
  • To make the beef filling, brown the beef over medium-high heat until it is no longer pink. Drain off any excess fat.
  • Add the taco seasoning and water to the beef, and bring to a simmer. Reduce heat to low and cook for 15 minutes, or until the liquid has been absorbed.
  • Let the braid cool slightly before serving. This will allow the filling to set and the flavors to meld.
