CROCK POT HAM AND BEANS

This is cheap eating at it's best. Really good for scraping by at the end of the month if your cash gets low. Goes best with freshly baked corn muffins drizzled with honey.

Time 9h

Yield 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 lb dried great northern beans (mixed if desired) or 1 lb other dried beans (mixed if desired)
3 garlic cloves, peeled and sliced
1 large sweet onion, chopped coarsely
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 tablespoon chopped parsley
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1 lb smoked ham or 1 lb ham hock

SLOW COOKER GREEN BEANS, HAM AND POTATOES

Slow Cooker Green Beans, Ham and Potatoes image

I make this dish often; I have never really measured the ingredients, but can give you a reasonable approximation. Note: Freeze leftover cooking liquid, and then add to bean soup, ham or cabbage dishes, or use to cook dumplings in. It's delicious!

Time 4h30m

Yield 10

Number Of Ingredients 9

2 pounds fresh green beans, rinsed and trimmed
1 large onion, chopped
3 ham hocks
1 ½ pounds new potatoes, quartered
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon seasoning salt
1 tablespoon chicken bouillon granules
ground black pepper to taste

Steps:

  • Halve beans if they are large, place in a slow cooker with water to barely cover, and add onion and ham hocks. Cover, and cook on High until simmering. Reduce heat to Low, and cook for 2 to 3 hours, or until beans are crisp but not done.
  • Add potatoes, and cook for another 45 minutes. While potatoes are cooking, remove ham hocks from slow cooker, and remove meat from bones. Chop or shred meat, and return to slow cooker. Season with garlic powder, onion powder, seasoning salt, bouillon, and pepper. Cook until potatoes are done, then adjust seasoning to taste.
  • To serve, use a slotted spoon to put beans, potatoes, and ham into a serving dish with a little broth.

PINTO BEANS WITH HAM FOR THE CROCK POT

Pinto Beans With Ham for the Crock Pot image

I used to spend all day cooking a pot of beans and watching them carefully so they didn't burn. The crock pot solves that problem. Serve a big bowl of these with big piece of cornbread...That's good eating.

Provided by Sandy in Oklahoma

Categories     Ham

Time 8h5m

Yield 6-8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 lb dried pinto bean, sorted and washed
5 cups water
1 large onion, chopped
4 -8 ounces cooked ham, chopped
3 garlic cloves, minced
2 jalapeno peppers, seeded and chopped
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 teaspoon pepper
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
salt, to taste

Steps:

  • Cover beans with water and soak overnight; drain.
  • Place beans in a 6 quart crock pot with water and remaining ingredients except salt. Cook on low setting for 8-10 hours, or until beans are soft and done. Stir a couple of times during cooking, if possible. Add salt after beans are done. Cooking salt in the beans will make them tough.
  • Note: The jalapenos will give your beans a bit of heat. You can control how hot you want them by the amount of pepper you add. If you want no heat, replace the jalapeno with 2 tablespoons of chopped green bell pepper.

Tips:

  • Use high-quality ingredients for the best flavor. Look for ham that is smoked or cured, and beans that are fresh or dried. If using dried beans, be sure to soak them overnight before cooking.
  • Season the beans and ham to taste. Common seasonings include salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika.
  • Add vegetables to the pot for extra flavor and nutrition. Good choices include carrots, celery, onions, and potatoes.
  • Cook the beans and ham on low heat for 8-10 hours, or until the beans are tender and the ham is heated through.
  • Serve the beans and ham with cornbread, biscuits, or rice.

Conclusion:

Beans and ham is a classic Southern dish that is easy to make and always a crowd-pleaser. With just a few simple ingredients, you can create a delicious and hearty meal that the whole family will love. So next time you're looking for a comforting and flavorful dish, give beans and ham a try.
