Time 1h10m

Yield 24

Number Of Ingredients 7

1/2 cup butter or margarine, melted
1 large onion, finely chopped (1 cup)
1 package (16 oz) herb-seasoned stuffing mix crumbs
2 medium red apples, chopped (2 cups)
1 1/2 cups dried cherries
1 cup chopped pecans
2 1/2 cups Progresso™ chicken broth (from 32-oz carton)

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 325°F. Grease 13x9-inch (3-quart) glass baking dish with shortening or cooking spray. In 8-inch skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add onion; cook 4 to 6 minutes, stirring occasionally, until tender.
  • In large bowl, thoroughly mix cooked onion and remaining ingredients. Use 4 cups of the stuffing to fill body cavities of 12-pound turkey (do not pack stuffing because it will expand during roasting). Place remaining stuffing in baking dish. Cover with foil; refrigerate until ready to bake.
  • Roast stuffed turkey as directed in recipe. Bake stuffing in baking dish with turkey for the last 40 to 50 minutes of baking time or until thoroughly heated (165°F).

APPLE & HERB STUFFING

Apple & Herb Stuffing image

Why anyone would make Stove Top after making this, I just wouldn't understand. I made this recipe over 6 years ago and couldn't believe the ease or how it tastes! It's a Thanksgiving tradition now. I'm not a fan of apples baked in foods, but the sweetness of them is so good and gives the dish a great color. The recipe is from a cookbook called "Treasury of Christmas."

Tips:

  • Mise en Place: Before you start cooking, make sure you have all your ingredients and tools ready. This will help you stay organized and ensure that you don't forget anything.
  • Choose the Right Bread: For the best stuffing, use a bread that is slightly stale. This will help it absorb the flavors of the other ingredients and prevent it from becoming soggy.
  • Toast the Bread: Toasting the bread before adding it to the stuffing will help it crisp up and give it a nice flavor.
  • Use Fresh Herbs: Fresh herbs will give your stuffing the best flavor. If you don't have any fresh herbs on hand, you can use dried herbs, but be sure to use less since they are more concentrated.
  • Don't Overcrowd the Pan: When you are cooking the stuffing, don't overcrowd the pan. This will prevent it from cooking evenly.
  • Cook Until Golden Brown: Cook the stuffing until it is golden brown on top. This will ensure that it is cooked through and has a nice crispy crust.

Conclusion:

Herb and apple stuffing is a delicious and versatile side dish that can be served with a variety of main courses. It is perfect for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or any other special occasion. By following these tips, you can make the best herb and apple stuffing that your family and friends will love.
