These Barbecue Chicken Drumsticks are one of the most exceptional cookout recipes out there. We'll give you the scoop on how to make them as deliciously as possible!

Categories     Summer     dinner

Time 1h30m

Yield 10-12 servings

Number Of Ingredients 13

1 tbsp. canola oil
2 garlic cloves, minced
1/2 onion, finely chopped
1 c. ketchup
1/3 c. molasses
1/3 c. packed light brown sugar
1/4 c. minced canned chipotle chiles in adobo sauce
1/4 c. distilled white vinegar (or slightly less to taste)
1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
Kosher salt, to taste
Canola oil, for brushing
6 to 7 pounds skin-on chicken drumsticks (about 24), patted dry
Kosher salt and black pepper, to taste

Steps:

  • Heat the canola oil in a saucepan over medium-low heat. Add the garlic and onion and cook, stirring, until soft, about 5 minutes. Reduce the heat to low. Add the ketchup, molasses, brown sugar, chipotles, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce and a pinch of salt and stir. Bring to a simmer and cook, stirring occasionally to prevent the sauce from sticking to the bottom of the pot, until slightly thickened, about 20 minutes. Let cool. Set aside about 1/2 cup of the sauce in a separate bowl for serving.
  • Preheat the oven to 425 ̊. Brush 2 rimmed baking sheets with canola oil. Season the drumsticks with salt and pepper. Divide between the baking sheets, without letting the pieces touch. Bake until the drumsticks are very tender and beginning to brown, 35 to 40 minutes. Turn the drumsticks over and brush with about half the sauce. Return to the oven and bake until glazed, about 5 minutes. Turn the drumsticks again and brush with the remaining sauce. Bake until sticky and glazed, about 5 minutes more. Serve with the reserved sauce.

¼ teaspoon cayenne (use more if desired!)
¼ cup olive oil
¼ cup apple cider vinegar
Grill spray
BBQ Sauce of your choosing (see note below*)

Time 3h15m

Yield 6 to 8 servings

Number Of Ingredients 15

2 tablespoons packed light brown sugar
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 tablespoon paprika
2 teaspoons ground cumin
4 1/2 pounds small chicken drumsticks (about 18)
Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
1 cup ketchup
1/3 cup apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
1/4 cup fresh orange juice
2 cloves garlic, grated
2 tablespoons molasses
2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
2 tablespoons yellow mustard
Vegetable oil, for brushing

Steps:

  • Make the chicken: Combine the brown sugar, chili powder, paprika and cumin in a small bowl. Season the chicken all over with 1 tablespoon salt and 1 teaspoon pepper, then rub all over with the spice mixture. Cover and refrigerate 1 to 2 hours.
  • Meanwhile, make the barbecue sauce: Whisk the ketchup, vinegar, brown sugar, orange juice, garlic, molasses, hoisin sauce, mustard and chili powder in a small saucepan until smooth. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer and cook until slightly thickened, 10 to 15 minutes. (You should have 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 cups sauce.)
  • Remove the chicken from the refrigerator 30 minutes before grilling. Preheat a grill to medium and oil the grates. Grill the chicken, covered and turning occasionally, until lightly charred and a thermometer inserted into a drumstick (without touching the bone) registers 170 degrees F, 35 to 45 minutes, brushing with some of the barbecue sauce during the last 10 minutes of cooking. Transfer to a platter and brush with more barbecue sauce. Serve with the remaining sauce.

Tips:

  • Choose the right chicken drumsticks. Look for drumsticks that are plump and have a good amount of meat on them. Avoid drumsticks that are thin or have a lot of bone.
  • Marinate the chicken drumsticks for at least 30 minutes. This will help the chicken to absorb the flavors of the marinade and make it more tender.
  • Cook the chicken drumsticks over medium heat. This will help to prevent the chicken from burning and will allow it to cook evenly.
  • Baste the chicken drumsticks with the marinade or barbecue sauce while they are cooking. This will help to keep the chicken moist and flavorful.
  • Let the chicken drumsticks rest for a few minutes before serving. This will help the juices to redistribute throughout the chicken and make it more tender.

Conclusion:

BBQ chicken drumsticks are a delicious and easy-to-make dish that is perfect for any occasion. Whether you are grilling them in the backyard or cooking them in the oven, these drumsticks are sure to be a hit. So next time you are looking for a simple and flavorful meal, give BBQ chicken drumsticks a try.
