Time 35m

Number Of Ingredients 7

2 1/4 c all purpose flour
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 c cold butter or margarine, cubed (butter makes better scones)
1 egg
1 c milk
1 c (4oz.) shredded cheddar cheese
1/4 c prepared pesto sauce

Steps:

  • 1. In a bowl, combine the flour and baking powder. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • 2. In another bowl, combine the egg, milk, cheese and pesto. Stir in flour mixture just until moistened.
  • 3. Turn onto a lightly floured surface; knead 8-10 times. Transfer to a greased baking sheet. Pat into a 10-inch circle; cut into eight wedges but do not seperate. Bake at 400 for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown, Serve warm. Makes 8 scones

Tips:

  • To achieve the best flavor, use fresh basil leaves. If using dried basil, reduce the amount by half.
  • For a cheesy scone, use a sharp cheddar cheese. A mild cheddar will also work, but the flavor will be less pronounced.
  • If you don't have buttermilk, you can make your own by adding 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar to 1 cup of milk. Let it sit for 5 minutes before using.
  • Be careful not to overmix the dough. Overmixing will result in tough scones.
  • For a crispy scone, brush the tops with milk before baking.
  • Scones are best served warm, but they can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.

Conclusion:

Basil cheddar scones are a delicious and easy-to-make treat. They are perfect for breakfast, brunch, or a snack.
