DR PEPPER BBQ SAUCE

My family is stationed in Italy with my husband, Lieutenant William Robert Blackman. William grew up in Memphis, Tennessee, and I'm from Texas, so the dish that spells "home" for us is a good ol' barbecue. I have my own recipe for barbecue sauce that we like to pour all over sliced brisket. Eating it reminds us of weekend barbecues with our families. -Tina Blackman, Naples, Italy

Categories     Sauce     Blender     Garlic     Sauté     Quick & Easy     Backyard BBQ     Vinegar     Simmer

Yield Makes 5 cups

Number Of Ingredients 12

4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) unsalted butter
1 large yellow onion, chopped
4 cloves garlic, chopped
1 cup ketchup
3 tablespoons tomato paste
One 12-ounce can Dr. Pepper
1/2 cup cider vinegar
1/3 cup Worcestershire sauce
1/2 cup packed dark brown sugar
2 teaspoons ancho or New Mexican chili powder
1 teaspoon fine-ground white pepper
1 teaspoon kosher salt

Steps:

  • 1. In a heavy saucepan, melt the butter. Sauté the onion and garlic in the butter until translucent, about 10 minutes. Add all the remaining ingredients and simmer for about 15 minutes, until the flavors have blended. Continue cooking until the sauce begins to thicken, 20 to 30 minutes. Taste and adjust the seasonings with salt and pepper if desired. Remember, the ribs will have plenty of spice rub on them, so don't overseason the sauce.
  • 2. Let the sauce cool for about 10 minutes or until it is warm but no longer "boiling" hot. Puree with an immersion or traditional blender-this will make the sauce thicker. Let cool. The sauce will keep, tightly covered, in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
  • 3. Brush it on food 5 to 15 minutes before the cooking time is finished. If desired, serve extra on the side.

BARBECUE SAUCE W/ DR PEPPER

Barbecue Sauce W/ Dr Pepper image

This is a great sauce that I love to make for baked and grilled chicken. I do not remember where I came across it but have to tell you the 1 teaspoon of pepper is a little hot for us. So, I use only 1/2 teaspoon. Hope you love this just as much as we do!

Tips:

  • Use a variety of peppers to create a complex flavor profile. For example, you can use a combination of bell peppers, jalapeños, and cayenne peppers.
  • Don't be afraid to experiment with different spices. Some common spices that work well in barbecue sauce include cumin, chili powder, and paprika.
  • Let the sauce simmer for a long time to develop a deep, rich flavor. The longer you simmer it, the better it will taste.
  • Use a good quality Dr. Pepper. A cheap, generic brand of soda will not produce the same flavor as a name-brand Dr. Pepper.
  • If you want a thicker sauce, you can add a cornstarch slurry. To make a cornstarch slurry, mix equal parts cornstarch and water until it forms a smooth paste. Then, stir the slurry into the simmering sauce until it reaches the desired consistency.

Conclusion:

This Dr. Pepper barbecue sauce is a delicious and easy-to-make sauce that is perfect for any occasion. Whether you're grilling burgers, chicken, or ribs, this sauce will add a burst of flavor to your food. So next time you're looking for a new barbecue sauce, give this Dr. Pepper sauce a try. You won't be disappointed!
