BARBADOS RUM PUNCH

We tested with Mount Gay rum, made in Barbados since 1703. If you can't find it, just use your favorite gold or amber rum. Be sure to purchase a good-quality, low-sugar ginger ale, such as Fever-Tree, because the kick of spice works in concert with lime to balance the sweetness.

Provided by Julie Grimes

Time 5m

Yield Serves 4 (serving size: about 2/3 cup)

Number Of Ingredients 5

1/4 cup gold rum (such as Mount Gay)
2/3 cup pineapple-coconut juice (such as R. W. Knudsen)

BARBADIAN RUM PUNCH

When the British conquered the island of Jamaica 200 years ago, they made friends with this liquor, distilled from sugar cane. Nowadays, rum is produced in all countries growing sugar cane between the tropic of Cancer and the tropic of Capricorn. Posted for ZWT5, taken from "Dine Around The World". RUM PUNCH FOR ONE (BARBADOS)

Rum Punch for One (Barbados) image

I found this recipe on the Totally Barbados website when looking for a rum cocktail that doesn't require any tropical fruit (only because I didn't have any on hand at the time). So I gave this a try, and it's quite good. I made it with passion fruit juice instead of water. The original source explained that the word "punch" comes from the Indian word "paunch", which means five, and the five refers to the five ingredients of sour, sweet, strong, weak and spice. And this cocktail follows the standard of including one measure of sour, two of sweet, three of strong, and four of weak with a dash of bitters and sprinkle of spice.

Tips: How to Make the Most Flavorful Barbadian Rum Punch

  • Choose high-quality ingredients: Use fresh fruits like limes, lemons, and oranges. Opt for a good-quality white or dark rum. Fresh juices add brightness and depth of flavor.
  • Use freshly squeezed citrus juices: The freshly squeezed citrus juices add a burst of flavor and aroma that pre-bottled or store-bought juices simply can't match. If you don't have access to fresh citrus fruits, use the best quality store-bought juices you can find.
  • Don't skimp on the rum: Rum is the star of the show in this punch, so don't be shy about adding it. A good rule of thumb is to use 1 part rum to 3 parts of other ingredients.
  • Let the flavors meld: Allow the punch to sit for at least 30 minutes before serving, or even longer if you can. This will give the flavors time to meld and develop.
  • Serve chilled or over ice: Barbadian rum punch is traditionally served chilled or over ice. If you're serving it over ice, use large cubes to prevent them from diluting the punch too quickly.

Conclusion: A Taste of the Caribbean in Every Sip

Barbadian rum punch is a delicious and refreshing cocktail that's perfect for any occasion. It's easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste preferences. Whether you like it sweet, sour, or somewhere in between, Barbadian rum punch is sure to hit the spot. So next time you're looking for a tropical cocktail to enjoy, give this recipe a try. You won't be disappointed.
