BANANA NUT KUGEL

Categories     Egg     Side     Vegetarian

Yield 6-8 people

Number Of Ingredients 8

3 C matzo farfel
4 eggs
1/2 tsp. salt
6 TB sugar
1/3 C. butter (or margarine)
2 medium ripe bananas
1/3 C. nuts, chopped (optional)
1 tsp. cinnamon

Steps:

  • Pour cod water over farfel and drain immediately. Beat eggs with salt, sugar, and butter. Mix farfel into egg mixture. Put 1/2 farfel into a greased 1 1/2 quart baking dish. Slice bananas and put on top of farfel mixture. Sprinkle with nuts and cinnamon. Pour remaining farfel mixture over top and bake at 350 degrees about 30-40 minutes or until top is brown. Good hot or cold.

Tips:

  • Mise en place: Before starting, measure and prep all ingredients. This will ensure smooth and efficient cooking.
  • Use ripe bananas: Overripe bananas add sweetness and moisture to the kugel. Avoid green or underripe bananas, as they won't contribute the same flavor and texture.
  • Don't overmix the batter: Overmixing can result in a tough, dense kugel. Mix just until the ingredients are combined.
  • Grease the baking dish thoroughly: This will prevent the kugel from sticking to the pan.
  • Bake at the right temperature: The ideal temperature for baking kugel is 350°F (175°C). Too high a temperature can cause the kugel to overcook and dry out.
  • Cover the kugel while baking: Covering the kugel with foil or a lid during the first half of baking helps create a moist environment, which is essential for a tender kugel.
  • Let the kugel cool before serving: Allow the kugel to cool for at least 15 minutes before serving. This will help it set and make it easier to slice.

Conclusion:

Banana nut kugel is a delicious and versatile dish that can be enjoyed for breakfast, brunch, or dessert. With its simple ingredients and easy-to-follow instructions, this recipe is perfect for both novice and experienced bakers. Whether you're looking for a comforting dish to serve on a cold winter day or a sweet treat to share with friends and family, banana nut kugel is sure to satisfy.
