**Baked tofu: A versatile and delicious plant-based protein**
Baked tofu is a versatile and delicious plant-based protein that can be used in a variety of dishes. It is made by pressing tofu to remove excess water, then baking it in the oven until it is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. This process gives tofu a slightly chewy texture and a nutty flavor. Baked tofu can be used in place of meat in many recipes, such as stir-fries, curries, and salads. It can also be used as a topping for pizzas, sandwiches, and wraps. This article provides three different recipes for baked tofu that are sure to please everyone at the table: Classic Baked Tofu, Buffalo Baked Tofu, and Teriyaki Baked Tofu.
**Classic Baked Tofu:**
This simple recipe is a great way to enjoy the natural flavor of tofu. The tofu is marinated in a mixture of soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, and garlic powder, then baked until crispy. Serve with your favorite dipping sauce or use it in your favorite recipes.
**Buffalo Baked Tofu:**
If you're looking for a spicy and flavorful snack or appetizer, this recipe is for you. The tofu is coated in a spicy buffalo sauce, then baked until crispy. Serve with blue cheese dressing and celery sticks for a classic game day treat.
**Teriyaki Baked Tofu:**
This recipe is a delicious and easy way to add some Asian flavor to your meals. The tofu is marinated in a mixture of soy sauce, mirin, sake, and brown sugar, then baked until crispy. Serve over rice or noodles, or use it in your favorite stir-fry.

SPICY BAKED TOFU
This healthy, protein-packed tofu dish is filled with flavor. This is a spicy dish. I don't find it overly spicy but I like heat in my faux-meat! I served this with wilted garlic spinach and a fresh salad on the side. Remember that tofu is a concentrated protein, so you don't need as much tofu as you would meat. This dish is great reheated! If you want to be really creative, try grilling your tofu for an even more delicious result!

MARINATED BAKED TOFU
I am addicted to baked tofu!! Thank you Mollie Katzen and The Enchanted Broccoli Forest for the excellent marinade recipe! The tofu never lasts long enough to make it into a stir-fry at my house. I end up eating it by itself. I love it hot or cold. And of course absolutely everything to do with this recipe can be adapted to taste or what you have in the kitchen. Enjoy!

RICE BOWL WITH OVEN-BAKED MISO TOFU
I use the same marinade for the peppers as I do for the tofu in this sweet and spicy mix of toppings. Kimchi is the main vegetable, but if you only want it as a condiment add another vegetable of your choice - steamed or blanched broccoli or greens, for example, or roasted squash, or anything else that floats your boat.

Leave to marinate for 15 minutes, turning once or twice. Transfer to the baking sheet. Add the peppers to the dish with the marinade and toss to coat thoroughly, then place on the baking sheet in a single layer.
- Place the baking sheet in the oven and roast for 15 to 20 minutes, turning the peppers once with tongs, until the edges of the tofu are just beginning to color and the marinade sets on the surface, and the peppers are sizzling and beginning to color on the edges. Remove from the heat.
- If desired, heat the kimchi in a small pan or saucepan. Spoon rice into 4 wide bowls or onto plates. Top with kimchi, tofu, and peppers. If desired, douse the rice with some of the remaining marinade from the tofu, and serve.

CRISPY BAKED TOFU
From the Daily Herald. Joe Yonan is a food writer whose recipes I really like. I have not made this one yet, but am willing to bet it is good. Yonan says the freezing creates a much more satisfying texture to the tofu, and it also absorbs more of the marinade. The baked tofu can be eaten right away with veggie sides, or it can be cooled and used in salads, stir-fries or other dishes. Freezing time for the tofu is not included in the prep time.

Steps:
- Make the baked tofu: Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Line a sheet pan with parchment. Pat the tofu dry with paper towels and cut into dominoes, about 1/3 inch thick. In a large, wide bowl whisk together all of the marinade ingredients for the tofu. Pat each piece of tofu with paper towels, then dip into the marinade, making sure to coat both sides. Transfer to the baking sheet. Bake for 7 to 10 minutes, until the edges are just beginning to color and the marinade sets on the surface of the tofu. Remove from the heat and keep warm.
- Bring 3 or 4 quarts of water to a boil in a large pot. Add salt to taste and the green beans. Boil 5 minutes and using a slotted spoon or skimmer, transfer to a bowl of cold water and drain. Set aside.
- Bring the water back to a boil. Add the soba gradually, so that the water remains at a boil, and stir once with a long-handled spoon or pasta fork so that the noodles don't stick together. Wait for the water to come back up to a rolling boil - it will bubble up, so don't fill the pot all the way - and add 1 cup of cold water. Allow the water to come back to a rolling boil and add another cup of cold water. Allow the water to come to a boil one more time and add a third cup of water. When the water comes to a boil again, the noodles should be cooked through. Drain and toss with 2 tablespoons of the sesame oil. (If using rice noodles, boil 5 to 6 minutes without adding the water, until cooked al dente).
- Whisk together 1 tablespoon of the tofu marinade, the rice vinegar, garlic, ginger, hot chile oil or cayenne, soy sauce, remaining sesame oil and buttermilk. Pour over the noodles, add the beans, tofu and cilantro, and gently toss together.
- Heat a wide skillet over medium-high heat and add the noodle salad. Toss in the pan until heated through and serve.

RICE BOWL WITH CABBAGE AND BAKED TOFU
I cooked up a pot of Thai purple sticky rice that had been lingering in the pantry, and then decided how I would turn it into a meal. It was too sticky to use for stir-fried rice so I made stir-fried vegetables and oven-baked tofu, and served up rice bowls topped with both. I thought it might be an altogether too purple meal, but it was quickly devoured, and we are all the more anti-oxidant rich because of the anthocyanins in the red and purple foods.

SIMPLE BAKED TOFU
Obtained from my favorite vegetarian website. Tofu is healthy and tasty! Don't let it scare you away. Grill or bake and serve over rice. You can also serve them in stirfrys or salads that call for seasoned tofu. The seasonings are given in VERY generous amounts so reduce them if you desire a milder taste. Considering the amount of salt in the soy sauce, you can completely omit the salt if desired.

Steps:
- Cube tofu.
- Mix all ingredients into a large bowl.
- Let marinade in the fridge for about one hour.
- Preheat oven to 350.
- Place tofu on a cooling rack with a baking pan underneath to catch excess liquid.
- Bake for 10 minutes, turn tofu and bake for another 15 minutes, or until the edges start to brown.
Tips:
- Choose the right tofu: For baking, use extra firm or firm tofu. These types of tofu hold their shape well and won't crumble when baked.
- Press the tofu: Pressing the tofu removes excess moisture, which helps it to absorb the marinade and cook evenly. To press the tofu, wrap it in a few layers of paper towels and place it on a plate. Top with another plate and weigh it down with something heavy, like a can of beans or a heavy skillet. Let the tofu press for at least 30 minutes.
- Marinate the tofu: Marinating the tofu adds flavor and helps to keep it moist. You can use any type of marinade you like, but a simple olive oil, soy sauce, and garlic marinade is a good place to start. Marinate the tofu for at least 30 minutes, or up to overnight.
- Bake the tofu at a high temperature: Baking the tofu at a high temperature helps to create a crispy outer crust. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit before baking the tofu.
- Don't overcrowd the baking sheet: When baking the tofu, make sure to leave enough space between the pieces so that they can cook evenly. If the tofu is too crowded, it will steam instead of bake.
Conclusion:
Baked tofu is a delicious and versatile dish that can be enjoyed in many different ways. It can be served as a main course, a side dish, or an appetizer. It can also be used in salads, sandwiches, and wraps. With a little planning and preparation, you can easily make delicious baked tofu at home.
