Time 50m

Number Of Ingredients 4

4 medium sweet potatoes, (8 to 10 ounces each), scrubbed
Coarse salt and ground pepper
4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) butter
2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons packed dark-brown sugar

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 475 degrees. With a fork, poke potatoes in several places. Arrange on a foil-lined baking sheet; bake until tender, about 40 minutes.
  • Cut a deep cross in the top of each potato, and push the ends together to make an opening. Sprinkle inside with salt and pepper; dot each potato with 1 tablespoon butter and 2 teaspoons sugar. Serve.

Tips:

  • Choose the right sweet potatoes: Look for firm, unblemished sweet potatoes that are about the same size so they cook evenly.
  • Scrub the sweet potatoes well: This will help to remove any dirt or debris from the skin.
  • Prick the sweet potatoes with a fork: This will help the steam to escape and prevent the potatoes from bursting.
  • Bake the sweet potatoes until they are tender: The cooking time will vary depending on the size of the potatoes, but they are generally done after about 45 minutes to an hour.
  • Let the sweet potatoes cool slightly before topping: This will help to prevent the toppings from melting or becoming soggy.
  • Get creative with your toppings: There are endless possibilities when it comes to topping baked sweet potatoes. Some popular options include butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, marshmallows, nuts, and fruit.
