Steps:
- 1. In a large pot, cook penne pasta according to package directions; drain and set aside.
- 2. In a large saucepan, melt butter and cook onion and garlic for about 3 minutes or until tender. Add the spaghetti sauce, basil, oregano, and half the mozzarella cheese. Stir to blend and allow mozzarella to melt.
- 3. Add the pasta to the sauce mixture and combine thoroughly. Pour into a greased 7x9x2" Pyrex baking dish. Top with the remaining mozzarella and all of the hot pepper jack cheese.
- 4. Cover dish and bake in a preheated 375-degree oven for 20 minutes. Uncover and bake an additional 5 minutes or until bubbly. Top with Parmesan cheese and serve hot.
Tips:
- Choose the right pasta. Short pastas, such as penne, macaroni, and shells, work best in baked pasta casseroles. They hold the sauce well and don't get too mushy.
- Cook the pasta al dente. This means cooking it until it is just tender, but still has a slight bite to it. Overcooked pasta will become mushy and won't hold its shape in the casserole.
- Use a flavorful sauce. The sauce is the key to a great baked pasta casserole. Choose a sauce that is thick and flavorful, and that will complement the other ingredients in the casserole.
- Add some protein. Meat, poultry, or seafood can all be added to a baked pasta casserole to make it a more hearty and satisfying meal.
- Don't forget the cheese. Cheese is a must-have ingredient in any baked pasta casserole. It adds flavor, richness, and a golden brown crust.
- Bake the casserole until it is bubbly and golden brown. This usually takes about 30 minutes in a preheated oven.
Conclusion:
Baked pasta casseroles are a delicious and easy way to feed a crowd. They can be made ahead of time, so they're perfect for busy weeknights. And with so many different variations to choose from, there's sure to be a baked pasta casserole that everyone will love.
