BAKED MACARONI

I suggested using a glass dish because you can see how brown the casserole is getting (and brown is a good thing). My family loves the crispy sides and topping.

Yield 6-8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 (16 ounce) box ziti pasta, cook per directions
1 (16 ounce) box Velveeta cheese, cut in chunks
1/2 cup butter (divided 1/4 cup and 1/4 cup)
3 tablespoons flour
1 1/2 cups milk or 1 1/2 cups nonfat milk
salt and pepper, to taste
Ritz cracker
butter (to be mixed with the Ritz crackers)

Steps:

A friend of mine sent this recipe to me when I got my first apartment, because she knows how much I hate cooking! It's really easy -- even I can make it -- and tastes great. I'm not sure where she found the recipe, but it included the note 'Good source of protein, vitamin A, B group vitamins, calcium.'

Time 20m

Yield 8-10

Number Of Ingredients 9

2 cups uncooked elbow macaroni
8 ounces cheddar cheese
8 ounces American cheese
1 cup whole milk
1/2 cup sour cream
2 eggs
1/4 cup unsalted butter
1 teaspoon bottled hot pepper sauce
1/2 teaspoon salt

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a 9-by-13-inch baking dish; set aside. In saucepan, cook macaroni according to package directions; drain. Return macaroni to saucepan.
  • While the macaroni is hot, add the cheeses to the pan; stir well. Spread the macaroni mixture in the prepared baking dish. In a bowl, whisk together the milk, sour cream, eggs, butter, hot sauce, and salt. Pour the milk mixture over the macaroni.
  • Bake for 35 to 40 minutes or until golden brown and bubbling. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.

Tips:

  • Use a variety of cheeses: A blend of cheeses will give your mac and cheese a more complex flavor. Some good options include cheddar, mozzarella, Parmesan, and Gruyère.
  • Cook the pasta al dente: This will help prevent it from becoming mushy when it's baked.
  • Make a roux: A roux is a mixture of butter and flour that helps to thicken the sauce. It also adds a nice flavor to the dish.
  • Season the sauce well: Salt, pepper, and garlic powder are all essential seasonings for mac and cheese. You can also add other spices, such as paprika, cayenne pepper, or nutmeg, to taste.
  • Top it with breadcrumbs: A topping of breadcrumbs will give your mac and cheese a golden brown crust. You can use plain breadcrumbs or add some grated Parmesan cheese or herbs.
  • Bake it until it's bubbly and golden brown: This will take about 30 minutes in a preheated oven.

Conclusion:

Baked mac and cheese is a classic comfort food that is sure to please everyone at your table. It's easy to make and can be customized to your liking. So next time you're looking for a quick and easy meal, give this recipe a try. You won't be disappointed!
